Quantifiable WTCC racing action at Brands Hatch PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 07 September 2007

Action is never in short supply in the FIA World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) butthumb_jorg_muller_overtaking.jpg UK fans are in for a special treat at Brands Hatch later this month if the latest overtaking statistics are anything to go by.

WTCC has taken the 2007 race results of each of the top ten WTCC drivers and minused them from their grid positions. The results show that Germany’s Jörg Müller is the most vigorous in the pack, making up an average 3.06 places in each race.

“Funnily, it’s probably because I’m so bad in qualifying!” joked the BMW driver, who is currently third overall in the WTCC points heading into the championship’s rounds 17 and 18 at Brands Hatch later this month. “But also, my team chef taught me that I’m a very good racer. I take my time and try to stay out of trouble. If you are too aggressive then you are going to have an accident.”

Britain’s own James Thompson is the number two driver for overtaking according to the statistics, which overlook none-finishes, with an average 2.6 passes per race, possibly bolstered by his stellar performance in Valencia earlier this year.

After winning race one from pole, the N.Technology Alfa Romeo driver started race two from eighth thanks to the reverse grid feature. That did not stop the double British Touring Car Champion scything his way to the front of the world-class field making him the only driver to score a double win in one weekend this year.

“It’s exciting getting yourself into the points and onto the podium,” said Thompson, currently seventh in the WTCC points. “It gives you a great buzz and it’s what we’re here for. It’s the fulfilment of your career so it’s hard not to get excited about that!

“Valencia was fantastic. It’s very rare you achieve that sort of thing especially at world level so it was very satisfying and special for me; it’s something I’ll treasure throughout my career.

“Brands Hatch has given me some similar moments though, like when I went from last on the grid to win in the BTCC in 2002 I think it was. The competition wasn’t what it is in WTCC, which is outstanding, and I had the best car at the time, but I still had to get past all those cars!”

The third most dynamic overtaker in the WTCC top ten drivers is SEAT’s Yvan Muller, currently fourth in the standings.

Adult admission to Brands Hatch on Sunday 23 September costs £30, but only £24 if you book online at www.motorsportvision.co.uk, with an online weekend ticket costing £34.
