Wivenhoe racing driver Martin Galpin (20) clinched the UK Formula Vee Championship with a mature drive to 3rd place in a dramatic race at Oulton Park on Saturday.
Starting third on the grid with Championship rival Martin Farmer on pole position Galpin slipped to sixth place initially as the pack of thirty cars jostled around Old Hall corner for the first time. Starting the second lap Galpin moved around the outside of Farmer to claim third as a group of six cars broke away at the front. A lap later Farmer, who needed to beat Galpin to stay in the title race, tried to go around the outside of him at the ultra fast left hand corner approaching the Shell Oils hairpin. He slid wide, touched the grass and in an instant was into the barriers on the outside of the track. This left Galpin needing just to finish 5th or better to secure the title. After the race Martin, a University of Essex sports bursary student, said "Once Farmer went off I knew what I had to do and today is the first time in my life I haven't tried to win a race! I could see the other two cars dicing in front of me and just didn't want to get involved. I'd like to thank the many people who have helped and supported me this year because without them this brilliant result wouldn't have been possible." Martin is now looking to move up into a senior category for next season and is actively seeking business partners wishing to become involved in his career. |
