Wilson and Bargwanna confident after Sandown Qualifying PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 15 September 2007
WPS/WOW Racing lead drivers Max Wilson and Jason Bargwanna are taking confidence into tomorrow’s Just Car Insurance 500 after performing well in qualifying at Sandown International Raceway in Melbourne, Victoria today.

Both drivers turned in strong performances in qualifying today and stated their cars had the potential for even faster times. Wilson gave the new #8 WOW Racing Falcon a great qualifying debut by finishing in 12th position, missing the Top 10 Shootout by a mere 0.0551 seconds while setting a time only three tenths of a second shy of the fastest time.

Bargwanna meanwhile was unlucky not to progress to the second segment ofwpswowsandownpit-th.jpg qualifying, being bumped into 21st position after the chequered flag to deny the #10 WPS Racing Falcon progression into the next qualifying stage.

Earlier in the day Wilson and Bargwanna were joined by co-drivers Michael Caruso and Grant Denyer in setting strong lap times in the second practice session for the weekend.

Wilson ended that session with the third fastest time and Bargwanna was 11th quickest, reaffirming the pace of WPS/WOW Racing’s cars ahead of tomorrow’s 161-lap race.

Mark Winterbottom scored pole for the Just Car Insurance 500 today ahead of James Courtney and Todd Kelly.

WHAT THEY HAD TO SAY …

Max Wilson – #8 WOW Racing Falcon

“Our car ran well and I am pretty happy with our pace and result in qualifying today,” said Wilson.

“In saying that, I am a little unhappy at the same time because our car ran really well and I think we could have made the top 10 Shootout.

“We have a fair bit of time left in the car and we can still make improvements, so it was a little frustrating to watch the shootout from the garage.

“It’s all very encouraging because we have a new WOW car and this is only its second outing - just one wet test day and straight here to Sandown.

“With the pace and potential we showed today I am really looking forward to tomorrow.”

Jason Bargwanna – #10 WPS Racing Falcon

“We were sitting P13 in qualifying and felt that we had set a good time,” said Bargwanna.

“It just goes to show how close the category is, because we ended up being bumped after the chequered flag, which was really unfortunate.

“We have a really good WPS car this weekend and I think that on pace we would could have qualified in the top 15 without too many problems.

“I believe we have the car speed to move forward and it is a long race tomorrow. We have a strong race package and our cars suit this circuit, so I’m excited about our chances for tomorrow.”

Craig Gore – WPS/WOW Racing Team Owner

“The guys have come away from today fairly pleased and everything is on track for tomorrow,” said Gore.

“We have car speed that is probably stronger than our qualifying results indicate. It’s a long race tomorrow and I’m sure that we will move forward as the race progresses.

“The new WOW car is showing great speed very early on in its life and Bargs has also had good pace so far, so there is every indication that we are on track and the potential is there for the race.

“It’s important to have a good pit strategy and to not make any mistakes in these endurance races. The team is feeling good about this race and I can’t wait until tomorrow.”

Track History
Located in Melbourne the Sandown International Raceway was first opened in 1962. It held the Sandown International Cup, which featured world-famous drivers such as Stirling Moss and Bruce McLaren. Throughout the 1960s and 70s the race meetings continued to attract international stars along with the best of Australia's drivers. Australia's traditional Holden/Ford rivalry really surfaced at the track in the late 1960s and through the 1970s until Peter Brock won seven meetings in a row, out of a total of nine. The first 500 km race was held in 1984 and was named the Castrol 500.
