Baird breaks through for race three win at Sandown PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 16 September 2007
Team VIP Petfoods’ Craig Baird has driven strongly to finish off his round six of thebaird_thumb.jpg Carrera Cup championship with a race win at Sandown International Raceway today.

Defending champion ‘Bairdo’ took the lead from Reynolds when the current series leader made a mistake to pitch wide with Baird poised and ready to strike after setting the fastest time of the race on lap five. Baird’s race win joins with his top three results from yesterday’s opening races to place him third overall for the round behind Reynolds and Davison, which ensures the championship standings remain the same with Reynolds leading Baird in second with one round remaining.

“To take the win this afternoon was great, I was doing fast times and was just there behind Reynolds and I was ready when he slipped up and was able to take advantage,” said Baird.

“We are still second in the championship with 45 points between us and Reynoldstony_thumb.jpg with only one round left to run at my local Lexmark Indy 300 in October, so it will be tight but I am looking forward to some great racing to come!”

While Baird made it for the win, his Team VIP Petfoods’ team-mate Klark Quinn was hit again by a bout of bad luck after yesterday’s race one incident saw him lose what would have been a personal best result since his Lexmark Indy 300 result of 2005.

Klark still had the speed yesterday and drove from a grid position of 18th to 9th over the 14 laps of the second race, and looked set to put in a similar performance for today's final race.

Unfortunately it was not to be, with Klark out-braking himself into corner one while in eighth position and then had to deal with a stuck throttle.

“I was feeling really good in the first half of the race, the car was feeling good and I was moving through the field again, however on lap eight it all went wrong,” said Klark.

“I over-braked myself into turn one and went out onto the sand trap, driving out toklark_thumb.jpg rejoin the field in 22nd.

“Then as I continued along the back of the track the throttle stuck full-on and just speared me forward so I had no choice but to pull over, unstick the throttle and then take it back to the pits, but I guess that is how it goes sometimes.”

Meanwhile Klark’s father and Team VIP Petfoods’ boss Tony Quinn started today’s final run following on from his top ten and twelve positions in yesterday's two races.

Enjoying some dicing along the way, the senior Quinn eventually crossed the line in a respectable 16th position to place him 13th for the round, one position in front of Klark’s round position of 14th.

In the Aussie Racing Cars, Team VIP Petfoods’ Paul Kemal added a second place to yesterday’s fourth and third, to finish second for the round and maintain his third position on the series ladder.

“We changed the carbereattor ahead of yesterday’s second race and the car didn’t feel as good, so we changed that back ahead of this morning’s final run,” said Kemal.

“Second for the race and for the round is good, and cements my standings in the championship at third and now only six points from the series leader.

“With only one round left to run at the Lexmark Indy 300 it is sure to be on – of thekemal_thumb.jpg nine races I have run there I have won six so you can be sure I will be coming through on a mission for that title!”

Next weekend will see Team VIP Petfoods challenge for yet another title win, this time in the 2007 Toyo Drift Australia Series.

Daredevil drifter Robbie Bolger and his Team VIP Petfoods 840 horsepower Holden Monaro are leading the championship by 50 points heading into next weekend’s finale at Oran Park.

In 2006 Bolger narrowly missed out on the title after heading to the final round second on the ladder. Advancing to the final winner-takes-all battle, Bolger squared up against winner Beau Yates in a battle so close the judges were forced to call a re-run – eventually seeing Bolger relegated to the third step of the championship podium and ready for a rematch.
