Solid start for Ambrose at Dover PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 22 September 2007
Team Australia driver Marcos Ambrose has made a solid start to his weekend by setting the 15th fastest time during final practice for the RoadLoans.com 200 at Dover International Speedway today. Ambrose paced the one-mile oval in a time of 23.992 seconds aboard the Aussie Vineyards-backed #59 Kingsford Charcoal Ford Fusion to be the fastest of the Raybestos Rookie of the Year contenders during the final session of the day. Earlier in the day Ambrose posted the 19th fastest time in opening practice and was the fifth fastest driver in the Rookie practice.

Throughout the day’s three practice sessions Ambrose focused on improving the new front-end suspension and aerodynamic revisions recently made by Wood Brothers/JTG Racing with the ultimate goal being a consistent race set up for tomorrow’s 200-lap journey.

Regular NEXTEL Cup drivers dominate the field this weekend with 13 of the top 15 fastest drivers in final practice being regular starters in the top tier of NASCAR. The fastest time of 23.541 seconds was set by Denny Hamlin.

Qualifying for the RoadLoans.com 200 will be held tomorrow at 12:05pm local time followed by the 200-mile race at 3:00pm.

Ambrose currently sits seventh in the 2007 NASCAR Busch Series standings and is second behind fellow Ford driver David Ragan in the Raybestos Rookie of the Year standings with seven races remaining in this year’s season.

“We had a really good run here back in June when I recorded my career best finish in the Busch Series and I think the improvements we’ve made since then will put us in good stead for the race,” said Ambrose.

“Today was all about getting settled in the car and learning about the new front-end and aero so we know what to expect in the race.

“I’m pleased with the progress we made today, now it is all about putting in a good lap during qualifying and then keeping out of trouble during the race to ensure I’m in a position to battle for a good result tomorrow.”
