Horsepower guarenteed in Melbourne in November PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 27 September 2007
Should the 2007 Spring Racing Carnival fall victim to the recent equine influenza outbreak, Melbourne residents will still be able to get a dose of horsepower in early November.

While four-legged racing activities including the Melbourne Cup remain in jeopardy, it's full-steam ahead for the four-wheeled NGK Rally of Melbourne, the final round of the NEC Australian Rally Championship and penultimate round of the Victorian Rally Championship.

To be held on 9-11 November in the Yarra Valley region north of Melbourne, the event will see the 2007 Australian Rally Champion crowned, as the culmination to an action-packed weekend.

"Regardless of whether the Spring Racing Carnival takes place or not, the NGK Rally of Melbourne is going to be a fantastic event," event promoter Neil Cuthbert said.

"The best rally drivers from around the country will converge on the Yarra Valley and do battle all weekend for the last time in 2007.

"They'll be on some seriously fast and challenging roads, in one of the most picturesque parts of Victoria, only a one hour drive north of the city."

Following the penultimate round of the NEC Australian Rally Championship in New South Wales ten days ago, the championship will go down to the wire in Melbourne.

Toyota Racing Development driver Simon Evans holds a 119-point advantage over team-mate Neal Bates in the championship battle.

Melbourne resident Evans has been the dominant force in 2007, and is looking to wrap up the championship on home turf for the second consecutive year.

One of the city's premier sporting events, the NGK Rally of Melbourne will kick off on the evening of Friday 9 November at New Quay in Docklands, just outside of the heart of Melbourne.

From there, a big field of ARC and Victorian Rally Championship contenders will head north to the Yarra Valley for two days on some of the most challenging rally stages in Australia.

Spectators will have plenty of great viewing opportunities during the event.

In addition to exciting viewing points in the forest stages, spectators at the all-new Super Special Stages at the Yarra Glen Showgrounds on Saturday and Don Road sporting complex in Healesville will get a birds-eye view of the rally action.

2007 NGK Rally of Melbourne tickets go on sale next Friday, October 5, through Ticketek.
