New Champion Blitzes Qualifying for Penultimate Race
Marko Asmer demonstrated why his is the British F3 champion by claiming pole
position on a drying Rockingham track for Round 21 of the 2007 Lloyds
TSB Insurance British F3 International Series. The Estonian finished
0.5 seconds ahead of Atte Mustonen, with John
Martin putting in his best qualifying performance of the
season to claim 3rd ahead of Mario Moraes.
After two red flags involving Mihai Marinescu early on in the session,
Asmer was the first driver to switch to slicks while the rest of the field
put some banker lap times on Avon
wets. As the Rockingham track started to dry Asmers decision paid
dividends and the rest of the field pitted to follow his lead.
With 10-minutes of the session remaining Asmer set the fastest time
and then reduced it on the next few laps, finally becoming the first driver
to set a sub 1minute 16 second lap. Behind Asmer the rest of field
swapped places with regularity and when the chequered flag fell it was
Mustonen from Martin, Moraes, Rodolfo Gonzalez and Sam Bird.
In the National Class Richard Singleton, in his first Formula 3
qualifying session was as high as 6th overall at one stage but once 2007
champion Sergio Perez got a clear track on slick tyres, the status quo
returned to normal. Hamad Al Fardan was second fastest in the class,
with Singleton finishing the session in 3rd and 17th overall.
