Despite the 2007 GP2 Series finishing last Sunday, at Valencia, work doesn’t stop for
Racing Engineering and the other teams competing in the F1 feeder series. This
Thursday they all will be together again at Jerez for two days of testing that are in fact
the first steps of the 2008 season, when GP2 will start a fresh season with the use of a
totally new car.
This week’s test at the southern Spanish track will be carried out still using the current
cars and are mainly intended to evaluate new drivers for next year. For this reason
Racing Engineering will have at Jerez three drivers, in addition to their team driver for
last two seasons, Javier Villa, a brilliant second at the last race of the year and sixth
overall in the series, also testing for the Spanish outfit will be the Norwegian Thor-
Christian Ebbesvik and the Venezuelan Ernesto Viso.
Thor-Christian Ebbesvik comes from the Spanish F3 Championship where in his maiden
season, after racing for the two previous years in British FFord, he has shown a quick
adaptation to the category and is currently lying second overall in the Spanish Cup.
Ebbesvik, who is 23 years old, will drive the Racing Engineering Dallara GP2 on the first
day of testing at Jerez held on Thursday from 9:00 to 12:00 in the morning and from
14:00 to 17:00 in the afternoon.
On Friday, with the same timetable, the second day of tests will take place and then it
will be time for Ernesto Viso to be at the wheel. Viso is a driver of proven speed and
experience who has already raced the Racing Engineering Dallara this season in the
French and German rounds. Viso already knows how to win in the GP2 series and it was
only bad luck and a big accident at Magny Cours that prevented him from achieving
good results with the Sanlucar de Barrameda-based team with whom he will join forces
again this week in order to return to a GP2 car after several months of inactivity.
Along with Ebbesvik and Viso, Javier Villa will test on both days with the target of
working with his team and to start preparing for next season when, given his 2007 results
that included three wins and two second places, he should be one of the main
contenders for first position at each race and in the series.
