The Fifth Had It All PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 24 August 2006
The fifth round of the Shannons Australian Production Car Championship, held at Phillip Island on August 19-20, was the best one presented this year or even in the last couple of seasons, for that matter. It had great dicing, controversy and contact between cars – all the right ingredients!

Debutant Luke Searle took the trophy for the best result over three races in his BMW 130i, Leigh Mertens (Holden Commodore SSZ) the overall points (based on the two handicap races) and John Houlder (Ford Falcon XR8), Colin Osborne (Toyota Celica) and David Mertens (Proton Satria GTi) collected the class wins.

Series leader David Ryan had a dramatic weekend. After taking pole for the scratch race, his Ford Falcon XR6 Turbo went into limp mode at the start. After switching the engine off and on, he was able to start racing, by this stage from sixth.

He charged through to take the win while Veijo Phillips (XR6 Turbo) appeared to have second until tipped around at Honda. Houlder held off Searle for second with Nick Dunkley’s XR6 Turbo next ahead of

It seemed Ryan had similar bothers in the first of the handicaps but it was driveshaft this time and he wouldn’t finish. Searle raced past the class battles for victory over Dunkey, Houlder and Mertens. Commodore driver Steve Briffa went off at Lukey Heights, taking Osborne with him.

In the last it was Ryan that forged through with Mertens second and Osborne third. Searle was next after a first lap spin, taking Allan Shephard’s Celica which was second in Class B ahead of Keene.
