By winning overall at Phillip Island last weekend in round five, Bruce Heinrich has extended his 2006 Supaloc Australian Saloon Car Championship lead, but it was by no means easy.

From South Australia, the two times and defending champion, encountered a determined Queenslander in Kris Walton who challenged him continually over the entire weekend at Phillip Island on August 19-20.

They qualified first and second for race one in their Ford Falcon AU’s but it was the similar mounted Clint Harvey from West Australia, who emerged with the lead early in race one on Saturday afternoon.

Heinrich and Walton vied for the front running with Harvey slipping up the inside into Honda corner. Walton emerged second and had the lead by lap’s end.

With Jake Camilleri failing to start due to a blown piston, the leading Holden Commodore VT was Tim Rouse in fourth with Shawn Jamieson next - but the pair would have off road excursions on lap two, after John Goodacre dropped to the rear in his new VT.

At the front Walton was slipping away – that was until Heinrich passed Harvey. Then the gap reduced to the point that Heinrich was challenging for the lead.

On the second last lap he tried an inside run down the hill to the tight MG corner. When that didn’t work he opted for the outside at the same corner on the last lap. Still the result was the same and Walton was a narrow victory.

Harvey was a distant third with fell state resident Paul Fiore in the older VN keeping it clean and climbing to an eventual fourth. SA’s Brad Fox (AU) was another who was unassuming in his progression to fifth.

Roger Patterson (AU) stormed to fourth on lap two, as they fell off around him, before Peter Dane’s AU and the recovering Jamieson filtered past. Another West Aussie AU with Brett Niall aboard finished ninth ahead of SA’s Matt Lovell in an older model Falcon EA.

Goodace finished 16th in the debut race for his car while Scott Nicolas from Queensland in an AU, figured slightly better having been sixth on the opening lap – finishing 13th.

The second race, on Sunday morning, featured another close result. This time Heinrich got the jump off the line, and held out his rival for the eight lap duration.

There was around a second between them at the flag as they left all in their wake. Fiore was third at the end of lap one as Harvey was pinged for jumping the start and black flagged. Fox quickly ensured Fords were running one, two and three on lap two . . . and at the end.

Holdens finished in the next two places as Jamieson headed home Fiore. Then came Dane and Nicholas until the latter’s Falcon failed him on the last lap and allowed Goodacre into seventh ahead of Lovell, Victorian Brett Carrington in another new Ford, with Niall tenth again.

Rouse made it up to 13th behind Michael Barbara (VN) and Paul Pennisi (VT) while Harvey was two places further back and Patterson 18th. Down the order, Geoff Brown from Victoria in a Falcon AU went off at the Southern Loop towards the end, nudging a tyre barrier and breaking the gearbox. He would be back for race three.

The third race was a real carve up with several lead changes between combatants Heinrich and Walton. The former led off the line before Walton overtook him . . . several times. At the end of the thrilling race Heinrich led Walton to the chequered flag by just half a second.

The race for third was even closer. After Dane held down the final podium placing initially, Jamieson passed the NSW Ford and pulled away. However Harvey was on a charge, coming from 13th on lap one to fourth by lap six.

Only open space lay between him and third place, and he was able to negate that to the point that he emerged from the last corner side by side. The Falcon then inched ahead but Jamieson wasn’t finish, the Holden fighting back to win the duel by 0.019 seconds.

Dane was next ahead of Rouse, Niall and Lovell with Goodacre and Pennisi together. Fiore only completed the first lap, Nicolas lasted a couple more and Carrington’s event ended in the tyres opposite the pit wall.
