As the chequered flag came down on qualifying for round six of the
Shannons Australian Production Car Championship at Mallala Motorsport Park,
Michael Brock in Brock Real Estate Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 8 grabbed pole
position for the first of two one-hour endurance races to be held in twilight
conditions later today.
Brock battled time whilst replacing a shattered windscreen before
the session started after the bonnet on his Mitsubishi detached and smashed the
screen in the earlier practice session. For most of the session he could not
quite get to the pacesetter Garry Holt in his Eastern Creek Karts BMW 335i
Turbo, but ultimately extracted a 1 minute 18.8266 second time to edge the
championship leader by 0.13 seconds.
Apart from the opening round of the championship which was the
Bathurst 12 Hour, the series has consisted of a scratch race and two short,
class-orientated handicap races. This time its two one enduros with compulsory
pitstops for wheel changes, two for Class SP and one for Class A. Class B has
to do a compulsory pit drive through while Class C don’t have to do any.
Holt’s team mate Barry Morcom will start third in his Rondo
BMW while the Mazda RX7 shared by James Parrish and Ric Shaw completes the
second row. The Holden Commodores of Leigh Merten (Class SP G & D
Performance HSV) and Steve Briffa (Class A Paul Wakeling Holden SS) share the
third row ahead of the Chris Delfsma/Mike Fitzgerald Century 21 Ford Falcon
XR8.
The smaller engine capacity cars round out the small but
competitive field. The Mid West Multimedia Mini Cooper S of Trevor Keene and
David Giugni heads of the Jim Hunter Suspension Subaru Impreza RS of Jim
Hunter/Warren Bossie and the all girl Paul Wakeling Holden Vecta of Danielle
Argiro and Amber Anderson.
