Race Championships Build to Climax at Mondello Park PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 21 August 2006
With just two circuit racing weekends left at the County Kildare venue, Mondello Park's season is building to an exciting climax. This Sunday see the penultimate weekend of racing in the two premier Irish motorsport classes the Dunlop backed Supercar and Abarth Cup championships.

The second half of the season has seen the Supercars and Abarths as the stars of Mondello's race meetings and this weekends double headers should be no different. The Supercar championship is wide open following two about turns in the fortunes for the championship leaders. Johnny Whelan was the first to suffer two events ago, non-finishing twice to lose his championship advantage. Rod McGovern was then unusually off the pace at Mondello's last event and allowed David O'Brien to cut his advantage and move right into championship contention.

At the head of the Abarth race the competition is tough but reigning champion Derek Graham seems to be able to find a way through whatever incidents occur to appear at the head of the field. Graham has appeared on the podium at every race to build a very comfortable lead at the head of the field and could wrap up the championship this weekend with two more podiums.

Alongside the premier classes double headers the Mondello programme also includes two races for a combined grid of Global Lights and Stryker Sports cars and two Formula Libre events, with Formula Sheane and the Fiat Punto and Uno championships racing once.
