After years of success in Australian Open Wheel Racing, Adelaide-based Team BRM has today confirmed a major diversification of their racing exploits following the recent purchase of a Subaru Impreza WRX STI Drift Car.
The car - a custom built Sti-specification Impreza constructed last year by Sydney-based Protecnica racing - has been converted to rear-wheel-drive from its regular 4WD specification. The car was formerly driven with success in the Drift Australia series by the like of Beau Yates and Rick Bates.
Team BRM is currently in the process of putting together the resources required to maintain and support the car and has also begun the search for sponsorship to support a campaign on the Toyo Tyres supported Drift Australia championship.
“It’s going to be a new experience for the team but it’s one that I’m really looking forward to,” Said car owner Mark Rundle.
“Obviously the team is still very much focused on winning the Kumho
Tyres Australian Formula 3 championship this season and growing our
Formula Ford program at the same time, but we also recognize that
Drifting is very much a boom sport at this point in time.
“Drifting is getting a lot of media exposure, big crowds and a lot of
corporate support which is very attractive to new teams and drivers, as
well as introducing new sponsors to the sport. We think that with our
existing Formula Ford and Formula 3 programs we can offer potential
partners of the team a lot of value.
“It seemed logical that we should take advantage of this and think
about putting together a program for next season which is the plan at
this stage.” He said.
Rundle – a driver with outright podium finishes in the Australian
Formula 3 championship to his name - shook down the new car at Adelaide
International Raceway recently.
“Its great fun to drive and something very different to what I have experienced before,” he said.
“There is certainly an art to drifting well but you certainly can’t say
that it’s not fun! We will look to do a couple of meetings this year if
possible to get into the swing of things and get up to speed with the
sport.”
The team is welcoming expressions of interest from sponsors looking to
become involved with the team as they enter one of the current boom
areas within the Australian Motorsport Landscape.
Team BRM currently maintains programs in both the Kumho Tyres
Australian Formula 3 Championship and the Australian Formula Ford
Championship.
