The biggest Rallycross meeting of the
year in the country gets underway at Croft Circuit near
Darlington this forthcoming weekend (November
3rd & 4th) when a host of international stars descend
on the North Yorkshire track for the 2007 Jersey Farm
Hotel Rallycross Superprix.
Featuring the very best drivers from Europe taking on their British and Irish counterparts, it will be the only time that British fans will see the cream of Europe’s drivers in action in their various cars and with a number of added attractions, it certainly is not one to be missed.
So far attracting a total of 112 drivers, the entry list is headed once again by 13 times European Rallycross and defending Rallycross Superprix Champion, Kenneth Hansen in his Citroen C4.
But the Swede is not expecting an easy ride as continental drivers including 2005 Superprix podium finisher Jos Kuypers from Holland (Ford Focus), Dane Morten Jesperson (Peugeot 206), Frode Holte from Norway (Volvo S40) and Belgian Edwin Geraerts (Ford Focus) will take on the very best drivers from the British Isles.
Recently crowned British Champion Ollie O'Donovan will be at the wheel of Per Eklund’s Saab 9_3 and he’ll resume battle with the likes of Pat Doran (Ford Fiesta), Andrew Jordan (Ford Focus), Steve Hill (Mitsubishi) and Derrick Jobb (Ford Escort), whilst 2006 British Champion Christopher Evans makes a welcome return in his Opel Astra, but it could well be closer to home where the strongest challenge comes from.
Northallerton’s Dave Bellerby makes his Division 1 debut in another one of Eklund’s Saabs and team mate Kevin Procter from Leeming Bar was the only driver to beat Hansen at last year’s event so will be looking for a repeat in his Ford Puma.
Ferryhill driver Tony Bell (Toyota Corolla) will go head to head with Barnard Castle’s ‘Mad’ Mark Watson (Citroen Xsara) for the LINGsCARs.com Open Championship on Saturday prior to the Superprix whilst David Binks from Gosforth debuts his new Mitsubishi Lancer.
But all eyes will be on Scotch Corner ace Tony Bardy who not only prepares O’Donovan’s title winning, ex Will Gollop Peugeot 306, but he returns to the wheel to drive the 550bhp Supercar. Bardy is a former British Rallycross champion who has won around Croft in his Nissan rally car on many occasions and could well prove to be the dark horse.
Other Division 1 drivers include Steve Mundy (Ford Focus), Mike Manning (Ford Puma), Kevin McCann (Subaru Impreza) and the Ford Escorts of differing variations of Andy Grant, Bob Gooding and Chris Langley.
In the Super National class, the Lotus Exiges of Bellerby and Northallerton shopkeeper Darren Grimston head up the local challenge along with Jarrow’s Michael Boak (Audi TT) as they go head to head with not only their British Championship rivals, but an eight car contingent from Norway headed by the Mercedes C290 of the spectacular Hebjorn Haug.
Sunderland’s Hal Ridge will be up against a strong European field in the Super 2000 class whilst locals lads Ben Rennison (Cleasby), Joe Cunningham (Leeming) and Ingleton’s Matt Thompson head the field in the Junior Rallycross class.
Ian Horn from Great Ayton, Neil Maynard from Stockton and Ingleby Barwick driver Martin Peters aim to uphold local honour in the ultra competitive Stock Hatch class with David Bell from Ferryhill hoping to do likewise in the Minicross category.
Thirsk’s Brian Thornton (Metro), Teessider Terry Maynard (Triumph TR8) and Newcastle’s Lance Foster in his Mini will be major threats in the Revivals class too.
Saturday’s action gets underway at 9.30am and features the finals of the Rallycross Open and MDA Championships as well as the first rounds of the Superprix heats whilst on Sunday, the track action commences also at 9.30 with racing commencing at 12.00 noon.
An adult weekend ticket costs £23 each with adult admission on Sunday costing £15 per person but a limited number of advance tickets are available at just £20 and £13 respectively from www.RallycrossSuperprix.co.uk. Children aged 15 and under are admitted FREE and limited Grandstand seating is available at an extra cost of £5 per person, subject to availability.
