A Class Ahead PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 20 August 2006
There was hardly an eyebrow raised when Shannons Australian Production Car Championship leader David Ryan notched up another qualifying pole position at Phillip Island today.

It was round five of the series and the Ford Falcon XR6 Turbo driver posted a best lap of 1 min 6244 seconds, beating his nearest rival by almost a second. That was expected to be Steve Briffa but the Holden Commodore pilot could only managed sixth on his first visit to the island circuit.

The other spot on the front row went to the BMW 130i of Luke Searle – not a regular in the championship, nor Phillip Island for that matter. His time was good enough to beat the Falcon XR8 of John Houlder and the XR6 Turbo of Veijo Phillips while Leigh Mertens put his Commodore SSZ on fifth. Class A cars filled the top eight spots as Nick Dunkley (XR6 Turbo) and Chris Delfsma (XR8) filled the fourth row.

Class B team mates Colin Osborne and Trevor Keene were the next two in their Toyota Celicas ahead of the similar car of Thrifty’s Allan Shephard.

In the Trophy Class it was 18-year-old Luke Wood on 13th, narrowly ahead of Adam Beechey’s Honda Integra, Dennis Pana in the BMW 323i and David Giugni’s Toyota MR2 while David Mertens in the Proton Satria outpointed Class C leader Darren Best.

Race One scheduled for later in the afternoon was a scratch race counting to class points only while tomorrow’s two outings are class handicapped and counting to both class and the outright points chase.
