The 17th Annual Castrol EDGE Jamboree will hit the quarter mile at
Willowbank Raceway this Saturday, in the second running of the event
following its forced cancellation due to rain in August.
With over 200 entrants secured the re-run is sure to be a major
success with Pro Compact, Pro Turbo and Outlaw Sports Bike action all
set to thrill the fans over the course of the day/night event.
The Castrol EDGE Jamboree is the Grand Final of the 2006-2007 Sport
Compact Group Drag Racing Series, and with all but one of the 12
Classes yet to be decided, the Series Members will be fighting it out
on track to secure points and try and get their share in over $25,000
in Championship Prize money.
Headlining the program will be the 2005 American NHRA (National Hot Rod Association) winning Sport Compact Championship vehicle.
The RJ Race Cars built Toyota Celica of Gary Goodman and Joe
Signorelli (Gas Motorsport) is one of only a few Pro Turbo vehicles to
run into the 6-second range.
Purchased in immaculate condition, less the engine, the Celica will
receive a Gas Motorsport built 2JZ engine and will be aiming for mid
six-second passes once it’s sorted and ready to run.
Also built by RJ Race Cars and looking to join Goodman and
Signorelli in the six second bracket will be the world’s quickest Camry
of former ANDRA Group One Pro Stock champion and podium regular Tony
Wedlock.
The ability to cover the quarter mile drag racing distance in less
than six and a half seconds (6.46secs) places Tony Wedlock’s Toyota
Camry Solara as the quickest of its kind in the World.
With a top speed of 220mph (354 km/h), the Toowoomba driver’s
program of exhibition passes during this weekend’s Castrol EDGE
Jamboree at Queensland’s Willowbank Raceway will undoubtedly make the
car a crowd favourite.
The RJ Race Cars built Toyota Camry Solara has only done 20
competitive passes and now with Wedlock at the wheel, there’s a fair
chance its quickest run to date could very well be eclipsed during this
weekend’s Castrol EDGE Jamboree.
The Castrol EDGE Jamboree is promoted by the Sports Compact Group and is a joint venture with Ipswich’s Willowbank Raceway.
Sports Compact Group Manager Ray Box said that despite this
weekend’s status as a re-run after the original August running date was
forced to be rescheduled due to the weather, there would be no shortage
of action for the fans.
“There are over 200 entries for this weekend’s Castrol EDGE
Jamboree so excitement for spectators and competitors alike are
guaranteed,” said Box.
“With plenty of off-track action such as the Show and Shine, Car
Clubs Display and the Northfield Moorooka Babe and Bikini competition
complementing the on-track spine-tingling action of Wedlock, Signorelli
and all our other competitors the Castrol EDGE Jamboree is shaping up
to be an event not to be missed!”
General admission at the Castrol EDGE Jamboree this Saturday is $30 with student’s entry at $20. Kids 13 and under free.
This weekend sees the Castrol EDGE Jamboree re-run serving as a
major preliminary towards Willowbank Raceway’s Top Fuel Challenge – the
Australian Championship Round of the Top Fuel, Top Alcohol and Pro
Stock Motorcycle categories, to be held over January 4 and 5.
The New Year Top Fuel extravaganza at Willowbank Raceway delighted
spectators during the 2007 running of the event, which saw the quickest
side-by-side pass in the history of Australian Top Fuel drag racing at
the time set when Phil Read’s 4.66 seconds (317 mph/ 511 km/h) proved
just too good for Allan Dobson who turned in a 4.71 second effort (306
mph/ 494 km/h) in the final.
The overall performance over the two days reaffirmed Australian
drag racing’s position as the best competition outside the professional
ranks of North America and continued to enhance the reputation of
Queensland’s Willowbank Raceway.
