It looked like NSW’s Ashley Cooper could have snared his first pole position in the Ebanc Trade Commodore Cup series when he posted a 1 min 48.3124 second in the first of two qualifying sessions.
However series leader and Phillip Island maestro Marcus Zukanovic (Vic) or the Z-Man, struck back in session two of round six with a 1:48.3124 to again snare the top spot.
In his best qualifying to date, Michael Graham (Vic) also dipped into the 48’s to snare third spot ahead of Brett Holdsworth.
Axent team mates Christian D’Agostin and Geoff Fontaine shared row three ahead of Tony Bates, Daniel Orr (which managed an engine during the day), Nick Parker and David Gittus who was one tenth of a second faster than the last visit to Phillip Island but six positions further down the field.
The improvement in Commodore Cup performance was further shown with Daniel Richert – a two race winner here in May – only qualifying eleventh in front of the new car of Jason Domaschenz, Andrew Parker and Ross McGregor.
The latter had to undergo an change before race one, his team mate Stephen White also doing a powerplant swap and missing out on a competitive qualifying time.
