The Eastern Creek round of the Ebanc Trade Commodore Cup Series proved that the series is not over by a long shot as round six kicks off tomorrow at Phillip Island.

It is the second visit to the fast, exciting home of the MotoGP and World Superbikes Australian rounds – a visit cherished by those motor racers lucky enough to race there for it sheer exhilaration regardless of the sometimes unpredictable weather.

The last time the Commodore Cup raced at Phillip Island, it rained, it shone, it blew and the hardy who made the trek, witnessed some of the best racing they would ever likely to see. From a win by Marcus Zukanovic and two by Daniel Richert, to dramatic charges from the rear of the grid, spin offs – the round had everything!

Victorian Zukanovic and his Action Racing/Unior Tools VS Commodore won three out of three at round four in South Australia, then followed up at the round five New South Wales venue with two more wins. But it was Axent Racing Christian D’Agostin’s race three win there that signified Zukanovic does not have an easy route to the 2006 title.

In the first Sunday race at Eastern Creek it was entirely Zukanovic, leading all the way with his fellow state resident D’Agostin hot on his heels and a close second. Queensland’s Brett Holdsworth in the TTM machine was right with them at the flag.

Three seconds away was series principle David Gittus clear of Tony Bates and Michael Graham while there was nothing between Richert and Ashley Cooper seventh. It was similarly so for Stephen White and Geoff Fontaine as they squeezed into the top ten well clear of the best of the VH models – Ben Kavich.

In the third race of the last round, D’Agostin was electric off the outside of the front row, gaining the lead immediately and withstanding the late pressure for a win. “Its good to know that we can still win but it was hard work as there was lots of oil out on the track and I was the ‘pioneer’,” he said.

After a ordinary first couple of laps, possibly as a result of suffering a bout of the ‘flu over the weekend, Zukanovic put his head down closed on the leader. “We could catch him but getting past was another matter,” he said later.

Holdsworth was beaten narrowly to the line for third by Gittus but finished third overall. “The Commodore Cup cars are just so even, it becomes very difficult to pass somebody,” Holdsworth reflected later.

The was a tenacious duel to resolve sixth behind Bates as Michael Graham, White, Richert and Cooper finished line astern. Brian Bancroft had an engine detonation early in the race which left plenty of oil on the track towards the end of the main straight.
