Dunlop and the British Automobile Racing
Club (BARC) have announced the dates for the 2008 Great and British Motorsport
Festivals. In 2008, Rockingham will host its first Festival, and Castle
Combe returns to the calendar.
Visiting six of the UK’s top circuits,
the Great and British Motorsport Festivals aim to deliver a packed programme
of action, featuring some of the best British Championships.
New for 2008, the BARC/Dunlop Sport Maxx
Cup joins the Festivals as a full championship after an exciting series
of trial races in 2007. The production car championship, which is a potential
feeder series to the Dunlop BTCC, will entertain crowds with a varied mix
of cars from BMW, Alfa Romeo, MG, Vauxhall, VW, Renault, Nissan, Fiat,
Citroen, Seat and Mini battling for top honours.
Further tin-top action will come from
the MINI Challenge, with packed grids of Coopers and Cooper S Works models
battling for victory. The Challenge will be a highlight for visitors to
the MINI Festivals that will be an integral part of some of the race weekends.
The MINI and Dunlop Sport Maxx Championships are likely to add one further
race meeting to the six-meeting Great and British Calendar.
Fans of Le Mans style sportscar racing
will be catered for by the new Radical UK Cup, which promises packed grids,
compulsory pitstops and driver changes. The relaunched championship will
showcase some of the fastest cars to race at national level this year,
with this being the flagship of Radical’s UK racing programme.
“Our three core championships will form
the basis of the Dunlop Great and British television programme, and recent
races, and viewing figures, have proven that these championships can thrill
TV viewers as well as trackside spectators. We are delighted to work with
six circuits that share our vision for professionally promoting national
level motorsport” stated Dunlop’s James Bailey.
The three core championships will be supported
by the ever-popular classic Mini Se7ens and Miglias at all rounds. In addition,
the BARC Westfield Championship becomes a full time support series after
achieving an impressive increase in grid size in 2007.
“BARC have organised a series of prime
dates, focusing on the summer months. This will enable us to create more
of a Festival atmosphere – with the emphasis on entertainment on-track,
and in the paddock” added Bailey.
