Reigning
champion Fortec Motorsport is set to defend its drivers and Entrants titles with
a four-car line-up in the 2008 Formula Renault UK with Michelin
Championship. The Daventry-based team, which has won both drivers and
entrants titles in the last two seasons, has pre-registered four cars for next
season.
The
pre-registration process has been introduced for all three Renault Sport UK
Championships in anticipation of huge interest. The 2007 Formula Renault UK
with Michelin Winter Cup reached a capacity of 32 in record time, while
the 2007 ELF Renault Clio Cup saw a record 44 entries.
Teams that
pre-register their intention to take part in 2008 are guaranteed to be the first
to receive registration forms when championship registration opens in
January.
Alongside Fortec
Motorsport with a four-car entry is AKA Cobra and Carlin Motorsport, each with
four cars. Carlin, which will make its full debut in the Formula Renault UK
Championship, plans to have Henry Surtees (Edenbridge) as part of its
four-pronged attack after he raced in the recent Formula Renault UK with
Michelin Winter Cup.
Falcon
Motorsport has pre-registered Estonian pilot Sten Pentus (Faringdon) at the head
of a proposed three-driver line-up. Pentus recently took BARC Class victory in
round four of the Formula Renault UK Winter Cup having finished 11th
in FR2000 Class despite missing four races.
Another team
graduating from the Formula Renault BARC Championship is Alpine Motorsport with
its ace driver Dean Stoneman (Southampton). The 2007 Formula Renault BARC
vice-champion will be part of a two-car team. Eurotek Motorsport, which ran
Jordan Oakes (Hopton) in the 2007 championship, is planning to enter a two-car
team. AMR’s Andy Meyrick (Delamere) is the sole privateer to enter so
far.
Commenting on
the success of the pre-registration process, Championship Manager Simon North
said: “Formula Renault UK has enjoyed great strength in depth in recent seasons
with the destination of the title going to the final race meeting. The Formula
One success of our 2000 champion Kimi Raikkonen and 2003 champion Lewis Hamilton
is raising the profile of the championship and we hope this will be reflected in
the quality of driver attracted to the series in 2008.
