Maasai Warriors To The Rescue!

Day 2 – Monday - Nairobi to Naivasha.

After managing to upset the local police force when he demolished a sign of theirs on Day One, VK Vodka Kick Rally driver Steve Perez has once again been in consultation with the locals on the second day of the EASCR…

After a 5.30am start which took the Chesterfield driver and co driver Mike Stuart from the overnight halt in Nairobi to the stages around Lake Baringo just south of Eldoret, a minor navigational error, caused when Mike turned two pages at once, saw them take the wrong route and they ended up lost which meant they had to ask directions from some local Maasai tribal warriors!

Eventually, the pair were pointed in the right direction and despite damaging a compression strut they reached service in their Class 3 Datsun 260Z. Their trials and tribulations were not over, however, when a broken rear beam saw them have to traverse around 150km of the remaining stages, which included having to stop to let a herd of Zebra cross the road, meaning they had to nurse the car home to the overnight halt which they managed to do to maintain their 12th place overall.

“It’s been a long day and once we’d made friends with the Maasai warriors, we were soon on our way again but talk about being stuck at a Zebra crossing, this was the real thing! The car is considerably down on power and it was tough coaxing it through the rough stages with broken suspension but we’re here after two hard days and ready to see what tomorrow has in store for us” said Steve.

Day Three of the nine day marathon sees the crew head out for a relatively short route towards Elementaita and then back to the Kerio Valley before returning for the night halt at Naivasha. The competitive section through Elburgon has been cancelled due to the large number of almost impassable mud holes left by the recent rains.
