Over forty fighting Formula Fords will be battling for the Irish FF1600 Festival, the highlight of the Autobahn Martin Donnelly Trophy Meeting, at Kirkistown on Saturday week (26th. August), the Ulster fans are in for a real treat.
This is racing, as we all love it. Overtaking, drifting, and slipstreaming will be the order of the day as these nimble little sixteen hundred racers crawl all over each other, in their efforts to win the Martin Donnelly Trophy which will be presented in person by the ex Formula One driver.
The FF1600 Masters Race, which will end a day of packed action including the Heats and Final of the Irish FF1600 Festival, the Cash Converters Kirkistown Sportscar race, and races for Formula Vee and Formula Libre cars, has attracted considerable attention with names like Brian Nelson, Trevor Templeton, Bernard Dolan, Jonathan McGall, and hopefully the legendry Tommy Reid in the entry.
Brian Nelson
The Hillsborough drivers return to the cockpit is a coupe for the RPM organising team who are promoting the end of season extravaganza.
“Brian is one of the countries greatest motor sporting all-rounders.
Having won just about everything there was to be won on the Irish and
Scottish circuits during the `70`s, Brian than took up rallying and
became the Irish Tarmac Rally Champion in 1979.” Enthused Alan Tyndall
whose company Tyndall Productions will be televising the event.
Brian started racing at Kirkistown in a Turner Sports car in the early
`60`s. This was replaced by a 5S Crossle Sports-racing car with a V8
Daimler engine in 1964, but it was in powerful Lola and Crossle
single-seaters that he really made his name.
Brian competed in European Formula Two rounds in a Crossle 18F, and one
of his greatest victories was in America in a similar car when he won
the Formula B Championship at Sebring.
Trevor Templeton
Trevor, the son of the legendry post-war motorcycle and car racer,
Malcolm Templeton, is another outstanding talent to be coaxed out of
retirement by the Masters race. Trevor raced a Lotus Formula Ford at
home before graduating to Formula Atlantic and Formula Three on the
English circuits.
He held the outright Kirkistown Lap Record driving a Ralt RT4 and he is a former British Formula Atlantic Champion.
Jonathan McGall & Bernard Dolan
The FF1600 Masters Race will also renew another great partnership when
former Works Mondiale team mates Jonathan McGall & Bernard Dolan
once again appear on the same grid. These 1980`s rivals have a cache of
titles between them. Jonathan won the N. Ireland Championship in 1987,
the year that Bernard won the Irish FF1600 title.
Jonathan went on to come 3rd. in the British Championship in 1988, a
title that Bernard won in 1989 and they both raced in the Formula
Vauxhall / Lotus European Series, where Jonathan had 4 wins, and
Bernard two against the toughest imaginable opposition.
WIN A SPIN
Six lucky visitors to Kirkistown on the 26th. will have the opportunity
to `Win a Spin` around the track in one of the Autobahn Supercars.
There will be vouchers in the race programme and the fans who present
them at the Autobahn stand in the paddock will be entered for a draw to
lap the fastest circuit in Ireland in a Ferrari or Aston Martin.
“Autobahn have made the dream of using Supercars more accessible to
many people in Ireland, so we are happy to support this day where our
customers can come along and enjoy a close days racing and where some
lucky members of the public can `Win a Spin` in an Autobahn Supercar.”
Said Eddie Hamilton the Managing Director of the Supercar Club.
The event is supported by:- The Autobahn Supercar Club, Ards Borough
Council, The Morrow Group, Brett Martin, Dawson WAM, Cash Converters,
and Nutt Travel.
