WPS/WOW Racing has suffered misfortune with both its cars in the early
stages of Race 1 in the Dunlop Grand Finale at the Phillip Island Grand
Prix Circuit in Victoria.
Incidents out of the control of both drivers made the going tough in the early stages for Max Wilson and Jason Bargwanna but the pair soldiered on to finish the 27-lap race in 19th and 23rd positions respectively. Wilson qualified in 19th position earlier today in the #8 WOW Racing Falcon and moved up into 17th before Paul Morris made an ambitious dive down the inside of the Brazilian entering MG Corner on lap three. The ensuing contact forced Wilson wide and he dropped down to 23rd position. From there he charged on with a damaged car to finish in 19th, putting him within striking distance of a points scoring finish tomorrow. A lightning fast pit stop from the WPS/WOW Racing pit crew on lap 13 aided Wilson’s rise back up the order. Bargwanna suffered from a problem with the right front wheel on the #10 WPS Racing Falcon in the early laps of Race One today after starting from 24th position. Bargwanna was slowed by the problem in the early laps and when he pitted on lap six the crew examined the wheel and took time to rectify the problem. By the end of the race Bargwanna has climbed back up the order to 23rd position giving him a challenge in the last day of the season tomorrow. Garth Tander won today’s opening race of the Dunlop Grand Finale ahead of Mark Skaife and Jamie Whincup. Rick Kelly collected pole earlier in the day. Tander and Whincup are tied on championship points entering tomorrow’s two final races for the weekend. WHAT THE TEAM HAS TO SAY … Max Wilson – #8 WOW Racing Falcon “(Paul) Morris just drove into the side of me and the hit was pretty big,” said Wilson. “Something broke on his car so it goes to show how big the hit was and my car was not the same after the hit. “We will have to take a good look at the car overnight and get it right for tomorrow. I think we have good car speed in race set-up and I’m quietly confident that we can get things going well tomorrow. “I’m looking forward to tomorrow because I’ll be going hard and giving it a big go. It’s the last two races of the year so I won’t be hanging back.” Jason Bargwanna – #10 WPS Racing Falcon “It was disappointing to have the problem because I think our race pace would have been quite strong,” said Bargwanna. “We will be putting in a big effort tomorrow and not leaving anything on the track. “We’ve got two races to get up there and have a go. I’m looking forward to getting into it tomorrow.” Craig Gore – WPS/WOW Racing Team Owner “The guys didn’t not have very good luck at the start of the race today,” said Gore. “We’ve got to improve things overnight and get closer to the front tomorrow. “Two more races for the year and I know both Max and Bargs will be putting in a big effort so it will be interesting to see how we go on Sunday.” RESULTS: Race One 1 Garth Tander – 27 laps 2 Mark Skaife 3 Jamie Whincup 4 Craig Lowndes 5 Rick Kelly 6 Todd Kelly 7 Mark Winterbottom 8 Russell Ingall 9 Will Davison 10 Greg Murphy 11 Lee Holdsworth 12 James Courtney 13 Steven Johnson 14 Shane Van Gisbergen 15 Cameron McConville 16 Shane Price 17 Jason Richards 18 Steve Owen 19 Max Wilson 20 Dean Canto 21 Andrew Jones 22 Marcus Marshall 23 Jason Bargwanna 24 Alan Gurr 25 Paul Dumbrell 26 Simon Wills 27 Steven Richards 28 John Bowe DNF Paul Morris DNF Owen Kelly DNF Jason Bright RESULTS: Qualifying 1 Rick Kelly 1.33.7596 2 Mark Skaife 1.33.9540 3 Jamie Whincup 1.34.0249 4 Todd Kelly 1.34.0783 5 Jason Richards 1.34.1079 6 Craig Lowndes 1.34.2485 7 Garth Tander 1.34.3521 8 Mark Winterbottom 1.34.3923 9 Russell Ingall 1.34.6338 10 Will Davison 1.34.8872 11 James Courtney 1.34.8119 12 Steven Richards 1.34.8300 13 Jason Bright 1.34.8861 14 Lee Holdsworth 1.34.9065 15 Greg Murphy 1.34.9796 16 Shane van Gisbergen 1.35.3207 17 Shane Price 1.35.4777 18 Paul Morris 1.35.5867 19 Max Wilson 1.35.7951 20 Cameron McConville 1.36.1321 21 Steve Owen 1.35.8865 22 Steven Johnson 1.35.8872 23 Andrew Jones 1.35.8892 24 Jason Bargwanna 1.35.9589 25 Marcus Marshall 1.36! .0704 26 Dean Canto 1.36.0862 27 John Bowe 1! .36. 0957 28 Owen Kelly 1.36.1683 29 Paul Dumbrell 1.36.2500 30 Simon Wills 1.36.2763 31 Alan Gurr 1.36.5715 RACE SCHEDULE Australian Eastern Daylight Savings Times Sunday 18 November 11:25am – Race Two (27 laps) 4:00pm – Race Three (27 laps) AUSTRALIAN TV SCHEDULE Seven Network – Check Local Guides Saturday 1 December 2007 2:00pm – 5:30pm (Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth) 1:30pm – 5:00pm (Brisbane) Sunday 2 December 2007 2:00pm – 5:30pm (Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth) |
