Prestigious Prize for Formula Palmer Audi driver

Sheffield’s Stefan Wilson has become the first ever Formula Palmer Audi driver tostefan_wilson.jpg claim the prestigious McLaren Autosport BRDC Award at the Autosport Awards in London yesterday.

The 18 year-old was one of six young drivers nominated for the prize, which was decided by a two-day assessment at Snetterton circuit, Norfolk. During the test all six finalists took to the track in a Porsche 911 Carrera Cup, a Mercedes-Benz DTM and World Series by Renault machine, as well as facing questions from a selection panel.

Wilson wins £50,000, full membership of the BRDC, a test in a McLaren Formula 1 Car and a GP2 test. Stefan, who is the younger brother of Champ Car and ex-Formula One driver Justin Wilson, was overjoyed to receive the award: "It was a shock, I thought I was the underdog, so I was thrilled when I heard my name announced,” he said. “I could barely see to begin with when I was walking through the confetti! It feels amazing. My brother Justin and my Dad were up before me, they were screaming and I was still in shock! It's incredible to see my name on the side of a McLaren Formula 1 car as well."

stefan_wilson_car.jpg"My first year in single-seaters has been great. It's been fantastic being a part of the rejuvenation of Formula Palmer Audi, and the standard of driving has been very high. I've learned a lot, and it's great to be the first FPA driver to win this award. I've really enjoyed driving in the series, and it's led me to winning this award."

Stefan finished second in this year's Formula Palmer Audi championship. He joins previous McLaren Autosport BRDC winners including David Coulthard, Jenson Button and Anthony Davidson: "It's an amazing feeling to think that I'm on the same list as so many other great drivers," said Stefan. "I can't wait to drive a Formula 1 car, this is a massive opportunity. Now I'm going to see what doors this prize opens, before we make any decisions on what happens next year."
