Perkins puts illness behind him to get back on track PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 07 December 2007
Second-generation racer Jack Perkins has put the illness that forced him to step out ofjackperkins-th.jpg his Jack Daniel’s Racing V8 Supercar behind him by making a return to the track in a go-kart at VACC Park in Port Melbourne today.

Perkins, whose famous father Larry is a six-time Bathurst champion, raced alongside fellow young gun Shane Price in the 2006 Fujitsu V8 Series before the paired moved into the main game in 2007 before he was sidelined last month. The duo will pair up to compete alongside fellow V8 stars Jason Richards (who isalangurr-th.jpg paired with Tasman Motorsport engineer Adam DeBorre), Britek’s Alan Gurr along with recently crowned Fujitsu V8 Series Champion Tony D’Alberto, and the winner of the 2007 Mike Kable Young Gun Award Dale Wood, who will share the driving duties with his brother Glen in a Four Hour Enduro race tomorrow.

This weekend’s charity event, which will raise money for Cystic Fibrosis Victoria, is the first time Perkins has raced competitively since he was diagnosed with Type One diabetes last month; however this is not something the 21-year-old believes will affect his performance.

jackperkinskart-th.jpg“For the last few weeks I’ve been hanging to get back to race something, whether it be a V8 Supercar, Formula Ford or go-kart – it didn’t really bother me as long as I could race something,” said Perkins.

“My illness is something that can be managed and controlled over time; I’ve just got to stay on top of it. There are many top level sports stars who are able to do this, so I see no reason why I can’t do the same.

“For me this weekend is all about having some fun, getting back behind the wheel and enjoying my racing while helping raise awareness of a great cause – the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

“Hopefully, I will be able to get back behind the wheel to race a V8 Supercar sometime soon.”

During today’s practice, Perkins and Price spent the majority of the daybartprice-th.jpg reacquainting themselves with driving a kart.

The field for the charity event includes not only the V8 stars but a number of Australia’s top karters including multiple times Australian Champions Matthew Wall, Bart Price (Shane’s older brother) and William Yarwood.

Qualifying for the VACC Enduro will be held at 11:30am with the main race set to fire into action at 1pm.

The support race for the event is a 50-minute enduro race for the Midgets, drivers aged between seven and 11 years old, which will begin at 10:30am.

While reaching speeds up to 80km/h karting is a sport that teaches children, both boys and girls, basic driving skills well before they are able to obtain their road licence.

tonydvacc-th.jpgThere is no doubt karting is competitive but it is also fun and family orientated, with involvement in the sport both on and off the track giving it a strong feeling of community. It teaches driving skills and offers people an opportunity to gain a career in motorsport, all in a safe and organised environment.

There will be demonstrations by Vintage Karts and Pocket Bikes between 12:00pm and 12:30pm. Admission is free for spectators.

The VACC Enduro has been billed as a charity event with proceeds to be directed todpekarts-th.jpg Cystic Fibrosis Victoria and is an ideal way for the karting fraternity as a whole to give something back to the general community, especially at this time of the year when we think of many less fortunate individuals, who may need help and assistance.

VACC Park is located on Todd Road at Port Melbourne in Victoria.
