Six cylinder turbo propulsion out muscled the home grown V8s at Sandown Raceway today with BMWs fastest at the final 2007 Shannons Australian Production Car Championship round this weekend. Having already stitched up the series was not a deterrent to Garry Holt snaring the fastest qualifying time with the Eastern Creek Karting BMW 335i Turbo circulating in a best time of 1 minute 25.0065 seconds, two tenths faster than team mate Barry Morcom in the Rondo-backed machine.
Third was the remaining Class SP entry, the HSV Holden Commodore of Leigh Mertens, which was just seven hundredths of a second slower while fourth went to the Class A Century 21 Ford Falcon XR8 of Chris Delfsma just pipping the class pacesetting Paul Wakeling Holden Commodore SS of Steve Briffa on his last lap.
James Parish put his much used Sennheiser Audio Mazda RX7 out of the Class SP Trophy on sixth spot ahead of the Trophy Class Falcon AU XR8 shared by Matt Brady and Mick Caine. Next were the Thrifty team cars of Alan Shephard (Class A Mazda 3 MPS) and Len Cave (Class B Toyota Celica) who out-pointed class title winner Trevor Keene’s Midwest Multimedia Mini Cooper S.
Darren Best headed up Class C in his Best Leisure Industries Ford Focus clear of the Pitman Trucks Holden Astra of Martin Doxey while Rocco Rinaldo showed claimed the Class D top spot in his Thompson Alfa 159 diesel.
The 2007 Shannons Australian Production Car Championship concludes later today with a one hour race. It will feature handicap starts and mandatory pitstops for Class SP, A and B. Class SP are required to undertake two wheel changes, Class A one and Class B simply has to do a pit drive through. Prior to that there will be a non-points scoring six lap sprint race.
