After finishing fifth behind four Fords in the first round of qualifying, Holden Commodore driver John Goodacre (SA) bounced back to grab pole position for the opening race of the last round of the Supaloc Australian Saloon Car Championship at Sandown Raceway today.
Goodacre pushed his Brice Australian Holden around the Victorian circuit in a sub record 1 minute 25.14.9 seconds to topple weekend pacesetter Kris Walton (Qld) from the premier position. The Talbrace Ford headed a brace of Falcons – no fewer than six AU’s occupying from position two back where South Australians Matt Lovell and Steve Kwiatkowski enlivened their battle for third in the series by both getting onto the second row.
Series leader Bruce Heinrich (SA) has a 64 point advantage over Walton going into round eight and realising he only needs to finish relatively high up, has taken some of the bite out of the four times series winner’s challenge. Heinrich only qualified sixth alongside West Australian Clint Harvey who is the only other series winner – taking the title in 2004.
Justin Garnett put his South Australian Ford around in seventh ahead of Queenslander Jake Camilleri who picked his Commodore up after being at the tail of the field in the first session. Fords also occupied the fifth row with Shane Smollen (NSW) edging out a repaired Sam Milton Ford after its Friday crash.
The field of 22 Fords and Holdens has their opening 12 lap race later today and then two more races on Sunday to finalise the points for season 2007.
