Fisichella Motor Sport confirms Millroy for Formula BMW 2008 PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 11 December 2007
Fisichella Motor Sport International is delighted to announce the signing
of 17-year-old Oliver Millroy to compete in its Formula BMW Europe team in
2008. Ollie is the recent recipient of the highly-coveted BMW Scholarship
after impressing judges in an evaluation in October.
Just four drivers were awarded the prestigious scholarship this year and
Ollie made his mark at the Formula BMW racing centre in Valencia, going
head-to-head with twenty other young hopefuls and setting the quickest
overall time in the 140bhp Formula BMW racing car.
Ollie has been very successful in his nine-year karting career to date. He
began racing competitively in cadets on his eighth birthday and has had
impressive results, including winning the British ICA championship in
2006.
This year Ollie won the first round of the WSK and French Open
championships before wrapping up his karting career in June. For the
second half of 2007 Ollie has been busy preparing for his career ahead in
single-seaters, testing Formula Renault and Formula BMW.
The 2008 Formula BMW Europe Championship will support F1 and GP2 for seven
races in Europe and is designed to offer a unique and high-quality package
to drivers taking their first step into the professional world of
single-seater motor racing.
Giancarlo Fisichella:'I want to say congratulations to Oliver and welcome
to the Fisichella Motor Sport family. I was excited to start this new
venture and it is good to sign Oliver first. We are very proud to have him
with us.'
Enrico Zanarini, Team Principal: 'Oliver is a real talent and we are keen
to work with him in his career from now on. I hope he will be part of our
team for a long time.'
Paolo Coloni, Team Principal: 'It was great to watch Ollie on his debut
with the new car. It was also our first time on track with our new BMW
chassis and by the end of the day we knew we had a winning combination of
team and driver in our hands.'
Ollie Millroy: "I am absolutely over the moon to have signed with FMS
International who, without doubt, will be the most experienced team on the
grid. My dad and I flew out to the factory in Italy on Wednesday where I
met all of the team and Paolo Coloni. I had an amazing day, which included
my seat fitting for testing on Thursday. The test was at Magione, near the
factory and we had a very good and productive day, getting to know each
other, working together and improving our times every time we went out.
The car set-up is very different to what I have driven in the UK and feels
a lot quicker and better to drive. I had a fantastic time and am very
confident that I will be on the pace before the first race and in a
position to produce some good results. 2008 will be a very important year
for me and I will give 100% to show that FMS International and BMW were
right to choose me. I won't let them down."
