Melbourne,
December 16th - KUMHO TYRES Australian Formula 3 Champion Tim
Macrow has officially been crowned the 51st Australian Drivers
Champion and recipient of the CAMS Gold Star following the
Australian Motorsport awards held in Melbourne on Friday.
CAMS President Mr. Colin Osborne presented the
23-year-old Melbournian with the prestigious award at the annual
awards function, held this year at the Subaru Interactive centre in
Melbourne’s Docklands in front of a star-studded guest list that
included Motorsport icons Vern Schuppan and Frank
Gardner.
Macrow’s name was added to the perpetual Australian
Drivers Championship trophy and to a replica of the Gold Star that
was presented to the driver.
Tim’s name now sits alongside
some of the greats of Australian Motorsport as one of only a select
group to have won the highest award available to drivers in local
racing.
Tim’s championship came in the most competitive year
ever recorded for the domestic Formula 3 Championship, Macrow
winning the title after a three way fight at the final round between
himself, Leanne Tander and Charlie Hollings.
Macrow won four
races in 2007 and won the championship by two points in the final
round.
He is the third driver to win the Australian Drivers
Championship in a Formula 3 car, following Aaron Caratti (2005) and
Ben Clucas (2006).
He recently tested a Champ Car Atlantic
car for Jensen Motorsport and has targeted the United States as the
next step in his racing career.
”It’s still sinking in,”
Macrow said at the presentation.
”It’s been a fantastic
season and the absolute highlight of my career. To win it the way we
did, after starting the final race from fourth and needing to win,
has just made it even better.
”To receive the Gold Star
itself, and see my name on the perpetual Australian Drivers
championship trophy with some of the very greats of our sport has
been a humbling experience.
“I see my future in the United
States; my test a few weeks ago was a very positive experience and I
am doing everything I can to race there next year.
”It’s very
difficult to find the support and funding needed to achieve it but I
know that If I can break into the US scene then there is a really
good chance of succeeding and progressing to the top.”
The
2008 Kumho Tyres Australian Formula 3 Championship for the CAMS Gold
Star kicks off between February 1 – 3, at the A1GP World Cup of
Motorsport event at Eastern Creek.
