| Australia's fastest top fuel dragsters bring in the New Year at Willowbank Raceway |

A full field of Australia’s fastest Top Fuel Dragsters will bring in
the New Year with a different type of fireworks this weekend for the
Willowbank Raceway Night Fire Top Fuel Spectacular on Friday January 4
and Saturday January 5. An influx of teams into Top Fuel this season had fired up expectations of a full eight-car field and multiple 300mph runs for Willowbank's January 4-5 Night Fire Top Fuel Spectacular, and the competitors of Australia have not disappointed. Willowbank Raceway Managing Director Steve Bettes said that the January Night Fire Top Fuel Spectacular was sure to be another crowd-pleasing
weekend. “The Night Fire Top Fuel Spectacular at Willowbank Raceway is the perfect way to kick off the New Year with the high-speed action of Australia’s fastest Top Fuel Dragsters combined with performances from Top Alcohol, Pro Stock Motorcycle and Supercharged Outlaws,” said Bettes. “Last year’s January performances created history and with more great runs by competitors at the QEC Nationals in September the stage is set for another record breaking two days. “With names like Phil Read, Allan Dobson, Phil Lamattina, Steve Read, Amanda Shepherd, Darren Morgan, Roy Smith and Top Fuel debutante Aaron Lynch all on board, it is sure to be a spectacular weekend!” Acting as an Australian Championship Round of the Top Fuel, Top
Alcohol and Pro Stock Motorcycle categories, the New Year Top Fuel
extravaganza delighted spectators during the 2007 running of the event,
which saw the quickest side-by-side pass in the history of Australian
Top Fuel Drag Racing at the time set when Phil Read’s 4.66 second (317
mph/ 511 km/h) pass proved just too good for Dobson who turned in a
4.71 second effort (306 mph/ 494 km/h) in the final. Martin Stamatis and Phillip Lamattina (4.660sec/316.67mph - 509.63km/h) recorded the fastest side-by-side pass outside of North America at the QEC Nationals and their pairing was also the quickest ever seen at Willowbank. Stamatis' speed takes him to within a whisker of 330mph (530km/h). Stamatis was looking forward to ‘winding up the wick’ at this weekend’s round, convinced he could push even more speed from his dragster, however unforeseen circumstances mid-week have unfortunately forced the West Australian to withdraw from the event. Meanwhile, Lamattina will be making the comeback of the century to appear for the January event after miraculously surviving one of the
most horrendous crashes in Australian Drag Racing History at the QEC
Nationals in September at Willowbank, leaving his $300,000 dragster
destroyed. While Lamattina has been busy readying his new machine, veteran Bob Shepherd has stepped out of his dragster this season to be replaced by his daughter Amanda, who scored a runner-up at Willowbank’s QEC
Nationals in September in only her second competitive appearance. The schedule for the Night Fire Top Fuel Spectacular has the Top Fuel Dragsters running their first run late in the afternoon each day, while all other sessions are in the cool of the night. That means fans can look forward to seeing flames blazing from the cars' headers in the evening sessions and spectators can also attend the event without having to be exposed to summer's day-time temperatures. This January’s event also features a family entertainment package including fireworks, skydivers and free kids rides PLUS nine other spectacular Drag Racing categories led by Supercharged Outlaws, Super Stock and Competition Eliminator.
