| David vs Goliath top fuel battle at Willowbank RacewaY |
|

| Saturday, 05 January 2008 | |
Willowbank Raceway played host to a showdown of immense proportions for
the Night Fire Top Fuel Spectacular tonight, with Top Fuel debutante
Aaron Lynch of Brisbane facing off in the final against reigning Top
Fuel champion Phil Read of Sydney.
The rookie and the veteran enjoyed their own State of Origin battle,
with the two time champion eventually winning out with a ‘hole-shot’
win – taking advantage with a quicker reaction time to beat Lynch to
the finish although Lynch ran with Read right to the end. “We broke a belt, so I think we could have gone faster than we did (5.00seconds/256.70mph or 410.72km/h) but I am really happy to take the win and extend my lead in the championship – I am looking to go for a third title,” said Read. Lynch, who is a regular competitor in the Top Alcohol and Top Doorslammer categories, said that it was a pleasant surprise to make it to the finals in his Top Fuel debut. “For us to get to the final is really a credit to the guys working
on the car, it was a great surprise for us to get there and we are
really happy with the result,” said Lynch.
“Even though we didn’t get the win it is a great achievement to line up against the reigning champion in the final, especially in the team’s debut in Top Fuel.” While the final provided plenty of drama, from the first elimination round action was guaranteed with the entire Top Fuel field providing plenty of gasps to the crowds with Amanda Shepherd, Phil Lamattina and Steve Read in particular giving the fans lots to cheer about. Top qualifier and miracle man Lamattina lined up against Phil Read in the semi-finals in his comeback weekend from a horror QEC Nationals
crash in September, with the Victorian carrot farmer losing-out by only
two hundredths of a second while running the only 300mph plus run for
the night (309.06mph/494.49km/h).
“It was just fantastic to be back in the car, and to do a run at night was great – this thing is fast, wild but smooth – a real credit to the boys and especially Theo from Pavtec," said Lamattina. "The team put in so much to first of all get us here, then get us to the semis and come so close to the finals and also to be the only car all night to go break the 300 mark was just great for everyone involved,” enthused Lamattina. Progressing from Lamattina to Lynch would not be the first time
Phil Read has faced off against a rookie driver in a final this season,
after lining up against fellow Sydney-sider Amanda Shepherd in the QEC
Nationals finals in September in what was only the 19 year-old’s second
competitive appearance. In that instance he took the honours as was to be the case in today’s first eliminator, however Shepherd nearly took it from him with a 5.97 second pass to his 6.06 seconds, however a jumped start saw her eliminated, allowing him to progress on to ultimately face up against his new rookie nemesis, Lynch. Steve Read, who earlier set the first four second pass of the night, lined up against Lynch in the semi-final, but a popped shoot on the burnout run followed quickly by a lost bolt causing oil to leak from the engine saw the Queenslander eliminated as Lynch streaked down the quarter mile to the final. At the close of this weekend’s round four of the Top Fuel Australian National Drag Racing Championship Phil Read has extended his championship lead over Alan Dobson to be 175 points ahead of the West Australian. While Lynch introduced himself to the Top Fuel points tally, he was not only enjoying his first ever Top Fuel event this weekend but also pulling double duty by taking his usual seat in the Top Alcohol category, progressing to the semi-finals before being defeated by top qualifier Gary Phillips. Top qualifier Phillips, who hails from Queensland, lined up against New South Wales’ Wayne Newby in the final with Newby taking the honours
when Phillips experienced tyre shake. Despite being eliminated in the
semi-final Brett Stevens maintained his championship lead over Aaron
Lynch in second. “We had a lot of luck this weekend - we were confident lining up against Phillips but before that we were lucky with Ben Bray red-lighting (jumping the start)," said Newby. "Then we had to change the motor for the final when we broke a rear main bearing in the run with Brett Stevens – so to take the win was a great feeling after a busy weekend for all the boys,” said Newby. In the Pro Stock Bike Queensland’s Peter Cochrane lined up against
South Australia’s Jason Lee in the final. With the points leader
heading into this weekend Callam Godeassi eliminated early with
problems on the start-line, Cochrane was keen to make up championship
points on the Victorian after heading to Willowbank 15 points behind
the Victorian, he did just that by taking the win and now leads the
championship lead to be 55 points ahead of Godeassi. Victories in the other categories went to Paul Cannuli (Supercharged Outlaws), Darren Doeblien (Super Street), Tony Whyatt (Super Sedan), Athol Jacobsen (Modified), Blaze Hansen (Junior Dragster), Jason Hammelswang (Modified Bike), Shane Moran (Super Gas), Dennis Byth (Competition), Peter Everett (Competition Bike) and Louis Galea (Super Stock). This weekend’s event has again reaffirmed Australian drag racing’s position as the best competition outside the professional ranks of North America and continued to enhance the reputation of Queensland’s Willowbank Raceway. The Top Fuel, Top Alcohol and Pro Stock Motorcycle categories will again be featured at Willowbank Raceway during the blue ribbon Winternationals feature on June 6-8. In the meantime the countdown begins towards the all-sedan drag racing affair at Willowbank Raceway during the Tin Top Titles on April 18 and 19.
