One of the newest members of the Fujitsu V8 Supercar Development series, Joel
Spychala, is set to get a whole lot of Mount Panorama practice under his belt
ahead of the 2008 season, with the 2004 NSW Formula Ford champion taking a start
in next month’s WPS Bathurst 12 hour.
The 25 year old from Tuncurry only
recently enjoyed a shakedown run in the Fujitsu series at the Phillip Island
final round, even managing to score series points, as he took to the track
aboard the Mid Coast Ford ex-Gary Deane, V8Race prepared, BA Falcon.
Now facing up to a full-time drive in the 2008 series Spychala can see no better
way to ‘get his eye in’ than by taking in some laps around Australia’s spiritual
home of motor racing aboard yet another V8Race entry, the V8Race Falcon GT.
“This will be my first ever time at Bathurst, and I really can’t wait to
get out there,” said Spychala, who started his racing career in go-karts at the
age of 15 before moving on to Formula Ford in 2003.
“I think the concept
of the 12 hour race is just great, and what better way to prepare for my first
full-time V8 Supercar drive than by taking in five or so hours around such a
fantastic and challenging circuit.
“The car I will take into the
development series next year has been purchased from V8Race, so it is a nice
symmetry that I will be driving with them in the WPS Bathurst 12 hour – they are
a great team of guys and I am really looking forward to working with all of
them.”
Rod Dawson of V8Race said he was ecstatic to have Spychala on
board for his team’s WPS Bathurst 12 hour campaign.
“Joel is a great
young guy, and it will be good for him to get in there and get a good number of
laps under his belt before he steps up to the Fujitsu series full time after a
great run at Phillip Island with us last year,” said Dawson, who fields a number
of cars in the series.
“As our lead driver, Joel will compliment our
team and we think we can get out there and have a good go at getting the car up
there.
“With these races, it’s a lot to do with the whole tortoise and
the hare concept – so we will be looking at getting a pace together that will
get us to the end, and get us there in a good position.
“Whatever
happens, the whole team is just really excited to be involved – this race is
great for the industry and for the guys that are directly participating as well
as the fans, to see all different kinds of cars out there on Mount Panorama like
the days of old is just perfect.”
Spychala will be joined in the cockpit
of his V8Race/Mid Coast Ford/Announcer Financial Falcon GT by Lindsay Yelland,
originally from Orange and now of Sydney, and V8Race Experience Melbourne’s
Operations Manager, Alex Saliba.
