A delighted Sam Bird (Formula Renault UK) has been told by doctors that, despite initial concerns, he does not have a fractured kneecap and that the knee is merely suffering from severe bruising and trauma following his 120mph accident at Donington on July 30.
“I’m over the moon” said Sam on hearing the news “I wanted to race
whatever the doctors said, but obviously my advisors had other thoughts
on the subject! However, now I know it is completely safe to forge
ahead with my challenge on the UK Championship. I have lost a lot of
ground due to the disastrous weekend at Donington, with a broken
driveshaft in race one and the accident in race two, but I am
determined to put in the best possible effort to regain some places”
Sam has been resting since the accident, using ice packs and keeping
the leg raised for much of the time, so the gym has been out of the
question. “I’ve been working on my upper body strength” said Sam “but
I’m quite desperate to have a run, kick a football and get back to
normal”
Bird’s car was completely destroyed in the first lap incident, and a
new one has had to be purchased in order for him to complete the
season. “Thanks to Fortec for pulling out all the stops and getting me
a new car, however, I will race with it unpainted and without any
“bedding in” so I guess it will be tough but I’m up for a challenge”.
Sam now lies 6th in the Championship, which will again be covered live on Motors TV on Sunday August 13 at 11.40am and 3.45pm.
