Bates Targa Tas top ten Mazda is Bathurst bound PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 28 January 2008
The Mazda3 MPS Rick Bates drove to a top ten outright finish and a comfortable class win in 2007’s challenging Targa Tasmania event is on its way to Bathurst for the 2008 WPS Bathurst 12 Hour.

While it will be steered for its WPS Bathurst Motor Festival debut by Jake Camilleri, Timothy Sipp and Scott Nicholas, the car is relatively unchanged since its Targa Tasmania success and is sure to give the fans something to keep their eye on over the race around the clock. Not only was the Mazda in the top ten, it was the top placed standard production or showroom car by the end of the gruelling five-day April event, outperformed only by race specification or rally cars, a result which bodes well ahead of its date against more of its standard showroom counterparts in February.

Lead driver Jake Camilleri, General Manager of Grand Prix Mazda Caboolture, said he couldn’t wait to get back to Bathurst aboard the tried and tested Mazda.

“I have driven at Bathurst once before in the HQ series, and so I can’t wait to get back there and have another go,” enthused Camilleri.

“Starting in go karts as a young kid then progressing to HQ racing and taking the QLD State Championship, then moving onto Saloon cars, sportscar racing and some endurance events, it is every racer’s dream to run at Bathurst and to be heading there with this car that has been proven on the hard tracks of Targa Tasmania just feels great.”

Joining Camilleri in the Mazda will be Timothy Sipp and Scott Nicholas, who competed in the 2007 WPS Bathurst Motor Festival aboard a Wilson Brothers Subaru.

The 2008 WPS Bathurst Motor Festival will be held at Mount Panorama on February 8-10, incorporating the WPS Bathurst 12 Hour on Sunday February 10.

Tickets can be purchased from Ticketek on 13 28 49 with discounted pricing available to patrons who purchase prior to the event. All patrons receive free entry to the Bathurst National Motor Racing Museum with each ticket, and children under 12 are free when they enter with a paying adult.
