Less Than £500 To Experience Clio Cup Racing PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 09 August 2006
Drivers will be given the chance to race in this season’s ELF Renault Clio Cup rounds at the World Series by Renault at Donington Park for less than half the cost of a standard one-race entry. As the spectacular event, which takes place on 9th/10th September using the Grand Prix circuit, is held independently of the British Touring Car Championship package, the entry fee determined by Renault Sport UK is just £487.49 + VAT.

The World Series meeting is expected to be part of a great send-off for the current Clio Cup race car, which is due to be replaced in 2007 by New Clio Cup. With applications for free tickets to the event already topping 105,000, a massive crowd is expected at the Derbyshire venue to witness rounds 15 and 16 of the 20-round Clio Cup.

Not only will those drivers already registered have the opportunity to race in front of by far the biggest crowd of the season, it also gives drivers looking at entering the series in 2007 the opportunity to experience Clio Cup racing at its best. Of the 39 deposits received for New Clio Cup, approximately half are from newcomers to the Championship and Renault Sport UK’s offer will enable them to get a taste of the action ahead of the eagerly-awaited new season with a new race car.

A number of teams, including reigning Entrants Champion and current Championship leader Total Control Racing, two-time Champion Boulevard Team Racing and regular front-running team Mardi Gras Motorsport are among those who own cars that can be used for such a one-off meeting.

Paul Hetherington, Team Principal of Mardi Gras Motorsport, commented: “This is an excellent idea and is hopefully going to encourage new drivers to come along and experience what Clio Cup racing is all about, hard but fair competition. It’s particularly good it comes at a showpiece event like the World Series because with such big crowds in the grandstands there will be a tremendous buzz around the circuit.

Included in the special one-off entry fee are an exclusive three-hour practice session on Thursday, 7th September, a 20-minute qualifying session on Saturday, 9th September and two 12-lap races. Round 15 will be held on the afternoon of Saturday, 9th September with round 16 on the afternoon of Sunday, 10th September.

The Clio Cup races share the billing on the 2.50-mile circuit with the Formula Renault UK with Michelin Championship and the three World Series by Renault Championships, World Series FR3.5, Eurocup FR2.0 and Eurocup Mégane Trophy. There will also be a demonstration by Renault F1 Team’s double Championship-winning R25 car and plenty of off-track activities to entertain what is expected to be a crowd in excess of the 50,000 that attended last year’s event.
