Big Bathurst weekend ahead for race fans PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 08 February 2008
The opening day of racing at the WPS Bathurst Motor Festival has given race fans plenty to look forward to ahead of a huge weekend of activity at the iconic Mount Panorama circuit.

Bob Pearson and the Pro-Duct Motorsport Mitsubishi Evo VIII topped the time sheets in both of today’s practice sessions, with a 2.33.1731s and 2.33.2738s respectively. Heading into the 2008 WPS Bathurst 12 Hour with two fresh new hips, Pearson is the unofficial poster boy for Event Charity Arthritis Australia. With these results the 61 year old has proven that those with Arthritis are definitely not to be underestimated.

Following closely behind Pearson in both sessions was Gold Coast V8 Supercar driver Paul Morris, who has started his team's campaign to defend the WPS Bathurst 12 Honours earned by Morris and team-mates Craig Baird and Garry Holt in 2007 strongly with a 2.34.4820s and 2.33.3893s.

Also from Queensland and in the top three for both sessions was 26 year old Klark Quinn in the Team VIP Petfoods Mitsubishi Evo IX RS, with a 2.34.7208s and 2.34.4595s seeing him come in behind Morris in both sessions.

Tomorrow’s WPS Bathurst 12 Hour action will kick off with a final practice session from 7.25am followed by qualifying at 1.15pm, although it is yet to be seen if the Event’s first casualty, Brett Holdsworth - older brother and team-mate of Melbourne V8 Supercar driver Lee Holdsworth - will make it to the final practice after he and his team sustained heavy damage in this morning’s first practice.

After running wide into McPhilliamy Park, Holdsworth clipped the ripple strip, causing the car’s back-end to step out and spear almost head-on into the right-hand wall, leaving the Holden Commodore with extensive damage and TAFE Smash Repairs looking at a long night ahead.

Whatever happens, race fans will be able to keep up to the minute with all the Event’s occurrences with live timing for the 2008 WPS Bathurst 12 Hour on the official Event website –www.bathurstmotorfestival.com.au– for Saturday’s qualifying and Sunday’s race around the clock.

Updated direct from Mount Panorama every two minutes, live timing means fans will also have the opportunity to see the actual race positioning and fastest lap achieved by each entrant as it happens.

Event Director James O’Brien said that he was pleased with the overall results for the first of the Festival’s three days.

“Today’s first day of action was a great way to kick off the WPS Bathurst Motor Festival, with the WPS Bathurst 12 hour competitors and those from the HQ series, Saloon Cars and Formula Vee series really putting on a show for the fans,” said Event Director James O’Brien.

“With an extended on and off track entertainment program also on the bill for the next two days along with the 200 odd race cars hitting the track, there will be no shortage of things to see and do at Mount Panorama this weekend.

“Children under 12 are free when accompanied by a paying adult, and with free entry to the National Motor Racing Museum with every ticket sold I urge anyone looking for a value for money weekend for the family to come out to Mount Panorama for an action-packed weekend."

Today’s action was not by any means restricted to the WPS Bathurst 12 Hour grid, with two groups of Holden HQs, 49 Saloon Cars and 56 Formula Vees all racing at the Mount this weekend.

John Wood, Gary Bonwick and Gavin Porteous took home the top three positions from the first race of the first group of Holden HQs, after starting the race from pole, second and third respectively. The second group of HQs will enjoy their races tomorrow, with Kieran Pilkington and Neil Corey heading the front row after completing qualifying this afternoon.

In the Saloon Cars, Kevin Weeks, Kris Walton and Peter Dane qualified up the top to be ready to start their first race tomorrow morning at the front of the pack after practice saw Weeks, Walton and Rodney Dawson come in as the top three.

In the Formula Vee category, Tim Hamilton, Mathew Pearce and Stephen Butcher started from the front for their first race after qualifying saw them top the time sheets this morning. Results for this afternoon's six lap race will be available tomorrow morning, with track incidents causing the results to be reviewed overnight.

The weekend's entertainment won’t be limited to the races with plenty of other entertainment on the cards including the return of the Freestyle Motocross (FMX) Nationals, the Superstreet Nationals, the Raceline/Peer Stadium Drifters, the Sports Bike Stunt Team, eight Drag and burnout cars, Mad Ron’s Jet Truck, a Daihatsu Mini Van powered by a French Fighter Jet engine, Nigel Benson in the 500ci Rear Engined Commodore Ute, the award winning The Don’ Mafia Show Piece Ford F350 Truck, the ‘Transformers’ movie ‘Ford Mustang Highway Patrol Car’ and Mad Ron’s Jet Bike.

A further 50 show bikes will be on hand as part of the Festival’s commitment to ‘bringing back the bikes’ with a Street and Custom Motorcycle show and a Club’s display day planned for the weekend of the event.

In a special treat for racing fans all the drivers of the WPS Bathurst 12 Hour will be available for autographs outside of their individual garages from 12.15pm – 12.45pm.

The 2008 WPS Bathurst Motor Festival runs at Mount Panorama on February 8-10, incorporating the WPS Bathurst 12 Hour on Sunday February 10.

Tickets can be purchased from Ticketek on 13 28 49 with discounted pricing available to patrons who purchase prior to the event. All patrons receive free entry to the Bathurst National Motor Racing Museum with each ticket, and children under 12 are free when they enter with a paying adult.

Access to the top of Mount Panorama will be open throughout the three day Event, with patrons able to catch a shuttle or drive their own car to the Mountain top for a unique viewing point of the track, with the Big Screen ensuring they miss none of the action.
