Formula Renault UK Championship front-runner Alexander Sims boosted his
2008 title hopes yet further at the Monteblanco Circuit in Southern Spain over
the weekend; three days of faultless testing underlining the 19-year-old’s
status as a pre-season favourite.
Benefiting from glorious sunshine at the Andalucian venue from the minute
the Manor Competition team arrived on Friday (8th February) Alexander made
tremendous progress and is increasingly confident he’ll mount a sustained
championship bid this year.
“Our trip to Spain was very good indeed and we certainly made some great
progress”, said the Wansford-based racer, “Over the course of the three days we
were there the weather was perfect, consistently warm, and our pre-season
preparations continued to be very productive.
“I was the quickest of the Manor drivers for the majority of the time which
was exactly what I had hoped and planned for. Occasionally Kris (Loane) was
quicker but that just helped push me on to go even faster. It’s nice to have a
quick team-mate up there with you though, we’re able to learn from each other
and push each other and the team on.”
With more than a full year of single-seater race car experience under his
belt now, the Cambridgeshire star is feeling ever more bullish for his second
season of action in Formula Renault UK. Undoubtedly a pre-season favourite for
championship glory, 2008 promises to be the year Alexander truly comes of age as
a single-seater racing driver.
“I feel much more certain and reassured now when I’m in the car than I did
this time last year”, he added, “There’s no substitute for experience. I’m
feeling very happy, very confident and really looking forward to the season. I
can’t wait for official testing to start in a couple of weeks so we can get a
true idea of where we are against the competition.”
Consistently fast throughout winter testing, Alexander has regularly headed
unofficial timings when Manor has tested at UK venues alongside rival teams.
With a similarly strong performance in Spain he now has two more British-based
tests in his diary before official Formula Renault UK testing begins in a
fortnight’s time.
Following a visit to Silverstone in Northamptonshire a week today, Monday,
18th February, Alexander will undertake one further test at Brands Hatch Indy
Circuit in Kent on Wednesday, 20th February. Official Formula Renault UK testing
then commences at Rockingham Motor Speedway in Northamptonshire on Tuesday, 26th
February.
