Time flies and this weekend sees the ultimate round of the 2006 Frestech Pan Delta Super Racing Festival. The championships are near completion and let's take a look at the title contenders and their chances.
HTCC Super Production
In the HTCC Super Production class, double champion Kenneth Look suffered his first defeat this season in race 4, when 2003 champion Paul Poon took victory in his Honda Civic EP3. Kenneth fought back with his no. 6 Honda Integra DC5 to win race 5, beating the hard charging Samson Fung Man-Wai before rain stopped play.
Kenneth still has a healthy lead in the Drivers' Championship. He is leading with 45 points, 21 ahead of his teammate Paul Chan Hok-Tak and Samson Fung, who are joint second. Philip Yau Wing-Choi is fourth just 1 point behind the duo. With a race win worth 10 points and with 3 races still to go this weekend, all 4 drivers have a chance of winning the overall title.
Formula Asia V6 by Renault
In the Formula Asia V6 by Renault series (FV6A), experienced Indonesian driver Ananda Mikola currently leads the championship after winning his home race at the Sentul Circuit, but only by the slightest of margins from Bahraini driver Hamad Al Fardan. Both drivers have 56 points from 6 races, but Mikola has 2 wins to Al Fardan's sole victory at Sepang.
Behind this duo, Indian hotshoe Karun Chandhok is just a mere 3 points behind in third place and with his British F3 experience, is very capable of overcoming the two drivers in front of him.
Formula racing is known for being very fast and very exciting. Due to their power-to-weight ratio, the FV6A cars are capable of lapping ZIC at even greater speeds than Formula 3 or even FIA GT cars. One experienced driver believes that the car will be able to a lap of ZIC in just 1 minute 28 seconds, breaking all existing records. This will be some spectacle!
HTCC N2000 Championship
In one of the most fierce competitions in the Frestech Pan Delta Super Racing Festival, the HTCC N2000 Championship, the three leading drivers Fong Wai-Kee, Gary Lam and Wong Ka-Hong are just 5 points apart on 178, 175 and 173 respectively. With 2 races to go, it is still far too early to say who is most likely to win the title.
Third placed Wong Ka-Hong, despite winning 2 races, the most by any driver in the championship, is only third while championship leader Fong Wai-Kee has yet to win a race.
Tsang Tak-Fan and Tsang Sin-Tung, fourth and fifth in the standings with 149 and 139 points respectively, are both capable of upsetting the top 3 if they could score maximum points in the two remaining races (40 points per win).
The championship is very much wide open and it is undoubtedly the most difficult one from which to pick a winner.
ZIC Superbike Championship
The ZIC Superbike Championship has provided the fans with some of the best racing of the season so far. The exciting fights for race wins on track are mirrored by the fight for the championship title.
This weekend will see races 7 and 8 being held, the final 2 races will be held on 9-10 December with the Asian Road Racing Championship.
In Class 1, where all the main protagonists compete, reigning champion Huang Shi-Zhao leads with 120 points having won 4 races this season, ahead of his arch rivals Cheung Wai-On (2 wins and 98 points) and He Zi-Xian (92 points), who has yet to win a race.
In Class 2, Wong Chi-Yue has a comfortable lead. He has 125 points, 49 ahead of second placed man Jan Vondrasek, with Chu Tat-Ki on 64 points in third place.
With a win worth 25 points and 4 more races to go, meaning a total of 100 points are still on offer, the championship battle is far from over.
Full power Circuit Hero
Ever since its introduction in June, the Circuit Hero race, featuring local drivers and locally tuned up machineries, has been gathering strength with every passing day. With a lower entry threshold than other more professional championships, 19 cars entered the race last time out.
As they gather more experience, the drivers and teams are becoming better equipped and prepared from one race to the next. The variety of machineries also adds to the spectacle, with such as Subaru Impreza, Toyota Vitz and Honda Fit on the track, the spectators can more closely relate to their own day-to-day vehicles.
Experienced racer Zhou Yong won the previous race in his VW Golf comfortably, but behind him there was plenty of action as drivers fought for positions while trying to lap quickly. This race will be one of the major highlights of the weekend.
All results of the races will be available from: http://www.zic.com.cn/zicen/raceresult.asp
