AFTER taking their first steps onto a V8 Supercar podium in the last round of the Fujitsu V8 Series at Queensland Raceway last month, Perkins Motorsport duo Shane Price and Jack Perkins have warned that they don’t expect regular podium visits to be a given for the rest of the season.
This weekend’s fourth round of the Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series is the first time the Development Series has visited the Sydney circuit since 2002 and the boys in black’ aren’t getting too carried away with their laststart performance.
They both see comparing themselves to the times and race speeds of the
cars in the main V8 Supercar Championship Series as the only way they
can truly gauge their progress over the year. “We’re not getting too
carried away with the Queensland result at all,” says Price, who sits
second in the series points to Adam Macrow.
“Oran Park is a bit more of a driver’s circuit than the last few the
series has visited and neither Jack nor I have raced a V8 there.
“It will be a test to see how close we can get to the pace of the guys in the main game."
“Steven Richards gave me some advice at the beginning of the season to
not really compare ourselves to the pace in the Fujitsu Series, but to
compare ourselves to the main game because that’s where we are aiming
to get to one day.”
Perkins, sixth in the series in his debut year in V8 Supercars, is racing for the first time in any type of car at Oran Park.
“Oran Park is the first of a few technical tracks coming up in our next
few rounds,” says the 19yearold, who will team with Price in the second
Jack Daniel’s Commodore for Sandown and Bathurst later in the year.
“That will make it a little harder to get to the pace but we’re really
trying and comparing ourselves not so much with the times being done by
the drivers in the Fujitsu Series, but our own times in relation to
that of the main series.
“At Queensland our pace was quite good compared to the main series
cars, now we have to work on our qualifying pace to match that. It
doesn’t matter if we win in the Fujitsu Series and are slow in
comparison to the main series, we have to use them as a yardstick.
“The broken gearshift I had in Adelaide cost me a fair amount of
points, though on the positive side, it has taken a bit of pressure off
me by not being right up the pointy end in the championship fight and I
can keep aiming at finishing in the top five in the series.”
Another massive field of cars has entered for the Oran Park event. V8
Supercars Australia has received 39 entries for the fourth round of the
championship.

“I’ve never driven a V8 Supercar at Oran Park before, but at least I’ve
been through the front gates unlike the next round at Mallala! I
certainly want to put my head down and hopefully we can get on top of
the little gremlins that have been affecting us and get back up into
the top three in the championship. Our car has been reasonably strong
in the races so far this year, but I’ve just got to sort out getting
the most out of brand new tyres in qualifying. It’s just more
experience using the new tyres, which I haven’t had in the past
generally by being a codriver in the enduros.”
Tony D’Alberto (#99 GMAC Racing Commodore VZ – 11 th in points)
“I’ve just landed back from a trip to England where I attended a racing
driver school run by Rob Wilson. It really gave me some things to think
about and stripped back race driving to the basics. I have some new
techniques and ways of thinking to implement in my racing and I’ll
start with it this weekend. We’ve had speed this year but haven’t been
able to translate that into results, which we need to do to create an
impression on the championship.”

Race Format: A three race weekend featuring two 20 minute races and a 35 minute final race. Race two is a full reverse grid event.
Television Coverage: Network Ten will telecast the Oran Park
event in a dedicated Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series telecast on August 20
from 2pm to 3pm AEST.
