The Power and the Passion of the Shannons Nostalgia Drag Racing Series was on
full display for the fans at Willowbank Raceway at the weekend, with over 190
entries giving spectators plenty to cheer about on Sunday.
With a bit of
everything including old school cars, a show and shine, fast times, camaraderie
and even girl power on display, the fans had plenty to get to their feet about
over the one-day event.
Shannons Nostalgia Drag Racing Series Event Promoter John Colbran said he
thought the event couldn’t have gone better.
“Sunday had the lot for the
fans – with everything from girl power to old school comradeship with rival
teams helping each other out for the benefit of the fans,” said Colbran.
“We had two female winners on the day in the American Muscle & Gas
brackets – Jude Pukis and Kaylene Gourley respectively - which was a first for
the Nostalgia Drag Racing Association.
“What a great achievement that
was for the girls and just goes to show the growing popularity and diversity of
the Shannon's Nostalgia Drag Racing Series.
“As Event Promoter I was
extremely proud to see the great comradeship shown between the Ford Brothers
with their 'Bad News FJ Gasser', who donated their gearbox after breaking their
front axle to the Junkyard Dogs Junior Fuel Mustang after it had blown its own
gearbox.
“While out of time to compete, this meant the Mustang could
make some exhibition passes for the crowd which really got them to their feet,
while the Mustang’s team-mate the T Bucket Altered had the fastest pass on the
day at 6.98 seconds.
“I would also like to say, that with the weekend
being my first event as a promoter for the Shannons Nostalgia Drag Racing
Series, I was overwhelmed by the tremendous support and words of encouragement
by the Willowbank Raceway Committee.
“I would like to extend a big
thank-you to all the staff that assisted in the running and operation of the
event on the day.
“It was fantastic to see a good crowd of spectators, a
solid number of entries and great roll up of cars for the show and shine,
especially after the incredibly hot weather of the day before!”
Other
category winners for the weekend included Scott McNaugh in the Aussie Muscle
Cars, James Straker in Classic Bike, Doug Stananay in the Hot Rods, Garry
Camelan in the Vintage Gas, Fredd Westhoff in the Slingshot and James Daleck in
the Junior Fuels.
The Shannons Nostalgia Drag Racing Series will now
head to Victoria, Sydney and Roma in Central Queensland before returning to
Willowbank for its National Championship event on August 17, 2008.
Willowbank Raceway Managing Director Steve Bettes said the weekend’s
Nostalgia action gave fans plenty to see as they counted down towards April’s
Tin Top Titles at Willowbank Raceway.
“What another great Nostalgia
weekend it was, everyone here at Willowbank really can’t wait to welcome the
Shannons Nostalgia Drag Racing Series back in August for their National event,”
said Bettes.
“As we gear up towards our next flagship event, the Tin Top
Titles on April 18 and 19, it was great to see the fans getting into the action
at the weekend with the drag cars of old and I am really pleased to now be able
to announce something very special for the 2008 Tin Tops event.
“For the
first time ever in Australia, a 16 car Top Doorslammer Field and for only the
second time ever in Australia a 16 Car Pro Stock field will be hitting the track
at Willowbank Raceway for the 2008 Tin Top Titles.
“In a usual event,
fans would see eight competitors line up against each other for the first round
eliminations, but at the Tin Tops they will get to see the top sixteen
competitors in two of Australian Drag Racing’s powerhouse Group One categories
duke it out for the win – effectively giving them twice the amount of racing
than ever before.
“This will be the first time ever that Top Doorslammer
has had such a large competitive field, and will be only the second time for the
Pro Stock category in Australia and the first time for Queenslanders to see so
many Pro Stockers up against each other.
“Willowbank Raceway is really
excited to be able to bring these bigger than ever before categories to their
fans, with a spectacle such as what is on the cards for April never having been
seen before in Australia Drag Racing history.
“With more Doorslammers
than ever before, more Pro Stockers than ever before, Supercharged Outlaws, Pro
Street and Pro Compact / Turbo categories PLUS a Huge Fireworks Display…its a
bigger BANG for Your Dollar all round this year at the Tin Top Titles.”
The April program will feature the penultimate round of Group One
activity in Top Doorslammer and Pro Stock categories as drivers enjoy one final
hit out prior to the season-ending Castrol EDGE Winternationals at Willowbank
Raceway on June 5-8.
Four wheels and a roof to boot will be standard for
all entries in this quarter mile extravaganza, which brings together many
traditional drag racing categories coupled with a selection of unique race cars
that enjoy cult following among their loyal fans.
