Track Championship Madness at Willowbank Raceway PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 10 March 2008
Everything from Supercharged Outlaws, Super Stock and Competition to Modified Cars, Pro Street and Bikes, Super Sedans, Super Streeters and Junior Dragsters and everything in between will be on the bill for this weekend’s Willowbank Raceway March Madness Track Championship Round. On Saturday March 15, all of these categories and more will come together to present a huge array of competitors and vehicles for the fans at the Ipswich facility.

While everyone will be looking to run good numbers, one steerer in particular who will be worth the fans keeping their eyes on will be Bailey’s Brake and Clutch Modified’s Graeme Frawley.

The reigning Modified Track champion, holder of a record nine track championships in a single bracket and the current points leader will be looking to further cement his title defence this weekend as he looks for title number ten.

“The 2006/2007 Championship was my ninth track championship and a record for the highest number of championships in a single bracket," said Frawley.

"If I can defend the championship this year I will also have the record for the highest number of championships won by any competitor overall at Willowbank, so that is the goal at the moment.

“A successful title defence would be my fourth consecutive, prior to that I had five in a row - six would give me the record for consecutive wins, but I shouldn't think too far ahead at the moment as I need to focus on the current season.

“In trying to lead the bracket and defend the championship, it has been a matter of just trying to get as many points as I can early on - there are only four rounds left and the competition is a lot tougher this year, there are no easy rounds.

“Defending is often quite difficult because everyone knows who you are, it is like having a giant target painted on your back especially with the large number one on the side of the car signifying your 'defending Australian champion' status as well."

With so many titles to his name, defending is something Frawley now has plenty of experience with, although this wasn't always the case.

“The first time I had to defend was in 1998 after winning the 1997 championship," said Frawley.

"It was a case of every opponent that lined up beside me knew they needed to cut the best reaction time they could and dial-in as close to dead on as possible, as opposed to playing it safe against someone without the title stigma.

"This strategy paid off for many of my opponents and really caught me out in '98 as I lost the title that year - however I now know better."

With so many championships in a single bracket, ‘what keeps him coming back’ is an obvious question to this 35 year old Redcliffe Modified fanatic – according to Frawley, it is the tough racing and the personal challenge offered by one of this country’s dynamo categories that ensures his Frawley Racing Rear-Engined Dragster is never too far from the race track.

“The racing is very, very close, you cannot relax with anyone and there is no such thing as an ‘easy beat’ - every competitor that rolls through the gate on race day has the same chance and ability to win the event,” said Frawley.

“There are no guarantees and for me it is all about trying to be as perfect as possible on every single pass. It is the technical aspect of trying to achieve this level of performance that keeps me going, it is not easy by any means and if it was I wouldn't be doing it.”

This weekend sees the March Madness Track Championship event serving as a preliminary towards Willowbank Raceway’s Tin Top Titles on April 18 and 19, 2008.

For the first time ever in Australia, a 16 car Top Doorslammer Field and for only the second time ever in Australia a 16 Car Pro Stock field will be hitting the track at Willowbank Raceway for the 2008 Tin Top Titles.

In a usual event, fans would see eight competitors line up against each other for the first round eliminations, but at the Tin Tops they will get to see the top 16 competitors in two of Australian Drag Racing’s powerhouse Group One categories duke it out for the win – effectively giving them twice the amount of racing than ever before.

This will be the first time ever that Top Doorslammer has had such a large competitive field, and will be only the second time for the Pro Stock category in Australia and the first time for Queenslanders to see so many Pro Stockers up against each other.

The April program will feature the penultimate round of Group One activity in Top Doorslammer and Pro Stock categories as drivers enjoy one final hit out prior to the season-ending Castrol EDGE Winternationals at Willowbank Raceway on June 5-8.

Four wheels and a roof to boot will be standard for most entries in this quarter mile extravaganza, which brings together many traditional drag racing categories coupled with a selection of unique race cars that enjoy cult following among their loyal fans.
