Will Power has performed remarkably well in his first ever drive of an IndyCar to be fastest in Team Australia’s debut IndyCar test at Sebring International Raceway in Florida today.
Power was the fastest of six drivers who participated in the opening day of the two-day test at the 1.66-mile circuit today, with each team present making the transition from the Champ Car World Series to the newly-unified IndyCar Series for the start of the season. Comparison to testing times from earlier in the month, when ‘existing’ IndyCar teams tested at Sebring, shows that Power’s fastest time from today would have put him an outstanding fifth fastest in the earlier test (full times for both tests listed below). Power enjoyed his first drive of an IndyCar at Sebring today, also his first drive of the #8 Aussie Vineyards – Team Australia Honda/Dallala/Firestone machine that is part of the Indianapolis-based KV Racing Technology team in 2008.  At KV Racing Technology, 30 crew members combined to work 5,460 hours in the 14-day period from when they took delivery of their IndyCar Series Dallara chassis and when the team's truck departed for Sebring in Florida. Power, who hails from Toowoomba in Queensland, Australia, will be back in action for the second and final day of testing at Sebring tomorrow. This first IndyCar test for Power and Team Australia will be followed by a further two days of testing on the 1.5-mile oval of Homestead-Miami Speedway on March 24-25. The first race of the 2008 IndyCar Series will be held under lights with the Gainsco Auto Insurance Indy 300 on March 29 at Homestead-Miami Speedway. WHAT THE TEAM HAD TO SAY … Will Power – #8 Aussie Vineyards - Team Australia Honda/Dallara/Firestone "It was good to go run around today and get back into form, because I haven't driven for five or six months – since Mexico City," said Power, who last drove a car in the 2007 Champ Car season finale in Mexico City, where he placed second. "It's good for driver fitness. It's really good to have a run like this before I get on the Homestead oval, which I've never run at before. "(The car) is pretty similar to the Champ Car. They run on the same tyre; similar weight, similar wheel base, a little less horsepower and not as much grip, but it's a car and therefore you try to make it go as quick as you can. “The team is great to work with and they’ve done an outstanding job to get us to this point today. I’m glad I could put some smiles on their faces today. “We will look to learn a lot more tomorrow and then it’s off to Homestead to begin learning the ovals and sorting the car for the season opener.” Craig Gore – Team Australia creator “What an outstanding effort by Will and everyone involved with the Team Australia IndyCar Series program for 2008,” said Gore. “It’s been an enormous effort for the crew to get everything prepared for this first test and today Will put in his own amazing effort to be so fast in only his first drive of a Dallara IndyCar. “We have to thank everyone at KV Technology for their amazing commitent to this program.
