Fabrizio Giovanardi has won today’s (Sunday) opening round of the HiQ MSA
British Touring Car Championship at Brands Hatch.
Rising star Mat Jackson
led from pole position in his BMW Dealer Team UK squad’s BMW 320si, but light
rain mid-race favoured the following Giovanardi’s Vauxhall Vectra VXR.
The Italian, last year’s BTCC Champion, took full advantage to steal away first
place and narrowly lead Jackson across the line.
Third, giving SEAT’s new
diesel-powered Leon TDI a podium finish on its debut, was Jason
Plato.
But the big loser was Colin Turkington – he’d started second in
his Team RAC BMW 320si but spun twice, although recovered to eventually set the
race’s fastest lap.
Two more BTCC rounds follow today, at 2.20pm and
4.30pm.
BTCC Round 1 Result (provisional):
1.
Fabrizio Giovanardi (ITA), VX Racing/Vauxhall Vectra VXR, 24 laps in 20m15.564s

3. Jason Plato (GBR), SEAT Sport UK/SEAT Leon TDI,
