Power 5th fastest in St. Petersburg PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 05 April 2008
tacrewstpeteprac-th.jpgWill Power has started the Honda Grand Prix of St Petersburg in a positive fashion with fifth fastest in practice at the St Petersburg street circuit in Florida today.

Power, who is starting his second IndyCar Series event this weekend, put his very limited experience in a Honda-powered Dallara IndyCar behind him to put the #8 Aussie Vineyards - Team Australia Honda/Dallara/Firestone in the top five on his first visit to the 1.8 mile/2.89km street circuit. Power was fourth fastest in the second practice session of the day, putting him fifth fastest for the day when times from the two sessions were combined. Power was joined by fellow ‘transitional’ driver Justin Wilson in the top five on the combinedtagaragestpeteprac-th.jpg practice times, with defending St Petersburg polesitter and race winner Helio Castroneves the fastest driver today.

After a steady start to the day with 21st fastest in the first session, Power and his crew from KV Racing Technology made set-up changes to decrease the understeer (push) in the Aussie Vineyards car. The changes paid dividends and Power was right on the pace in the second session, within 0.3 seconds of the fastest time of the day.

Final practice and PEAK Motor Oil Pole Qualifying will be held tomorrow, with a unique knockout qualifying format making it’s IndyCar debut. On Sunday (Monday morning Australian time), the 100-lap Honda Grand Prix of St Petersburg will be staged, shown live on ESPN in both the United States and Australia.

willsidechmsfri-th.jpgWHAT THE TEAM HAD TO SAY …

Will Power - #8 Aussie Vineyards - Team Australia Honda/Dallara/Firestone

“This was a much better second practice session for KVRT Aussie Vineyards - Team Australia,” said Power.

“The car earlier was really out of the window, but we worked out a couple of things. The team made the adjustments we needed to make and now it is much better to drive, much more for my style, so I am looking forward to tomorrow’s qualifying.

“Hopefully, we can make a couple more improvements and we will see how we go.”

Craig Gore - Team Australia

“Will and the team did a good job of improving the car between sessions and thewpowerdfaustinostpete-th.jpg end result was a fantastic fifth fastest for the day,” said Gore.

“It’s only Friday practice, but it’s a positive sign to start the weekend and with every session Will and the KVRT crew learn something more about the Dallara.

“Qualifying will be quite exciting tomorrow. St Pete is a very challenging street course and the new format will make it very interesting.

“Team Australia fans know how good Will is at qualifying on a street course from the last few years, so it will be a good chance to see where we are at compared to the other teams.”
