Global Jet’s Michael Trimble has moved up to third place in the Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series with an impressive run at round two held at Goulburn’s Wakefield Park in New South Wales over the weekend.
After qualifying seventh fastest yesterday Trimble endured a clutch problem at the start of the opening 17-lap race this morning dropping him down to 16th position at the end of the opening lap.
Throughout the race Trimble regained his composure to claw his way back to 13th at the finish aboard the #64 Global Jet Commodore.
With the second race griding with the top ten placegetters from race one in reverse order Trimble made an impressive start to gain a handful of positions during the opening laps. As the race continued the 23-year-old maintained his momentum to eventually cross the line six spots higher up than his starting position in seventh place.
The start of the final race, scheduled to be run over 30 laps, was marred by an ten car pile up at the end of the main straight. Luckily for Trimble he was able to narrowly miss the incident and lined up on the fourth row for the restart.
With the race shortened to 20 laps Trimble showed some impressive speed throughout the race as he clawed his way towards the front of the field.
While some of his more experienced rivals encountered troubles in the longer race Trimble maintained his composure to move into third position. He held this spot until the chequered flag to record his career best result aboard a V8 Supercar.
The three race wins were split between Steve Owen, Tim Slade and Dean Canto. Slade’s performance over the weekend secured his maiden round victory ahead of David Reynolds and Steve Owen. Trimble secured sixth overall for the round.
Third overall for the round was enough for Owen to maintain his lead in the championship on 534 points ahead of Trimble’s team-mate Jack Perkins (472) and Trimble is the highest placed rookie driver in third place on 414 points.
The next round of the championship will be held at Melbourne’s Sandown Raceway on June 7 – 9.
WHAT HE HAD TO SAY…….
Michael Trimble – Driver of the #64 Global Jet Commodore
“It is an awesome result by everyone in the team to leave here third in the overall championship, especially after my clutch problem yesterday,” said Trimble.
“It was pleasing to show some good speed over the weekend and gain another solid haul of points.
“While I’ve still got a long way to go before I feel absolutely comfortable behind the wheel of a V8, this weekend has certainly gone a long way to boosting my confidence and I’m really looking forward to Sandown.
“I’ll have a test day between now and the next round which will give me another opportunity to learn more about the car.”
