Britek motorsport scholarship shows potential at Wakefeild Park PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 06 April 2008
Britek Motorsport Scholarship’s Adam Graham (McLaughlin Freightlines) has finished seventh at the second round of the Genuine Ford Parts Australian Formula Ford Championship at Wakefield Park despite a heavy accident in the final of three races.
Graham sits seventh in the championship standings.

martin_swindle.jpgTeammate Martin Swindells (Refrigerated Rentals and Sales) added to his points tally with eighth place overall to be sitting equal tenth in the championship standings. While Ben Walter (Road Solutions) and Taylor Gore (PGM Investments) to come home equal 19th.

Graham (Lismore -NSW) was on the pace from outset this weekend, setting second fastest time in the two practice sessions on Friday. In qualifying he slipped to sixth place after struggling to find an advantage with new tyres.

The opening race featured three safety cars and only four green-flag laps with numerous incidents, including one that eliminated Taylor Gore (Geelong - Victoria).

Graham took fifth place; including the fastest lap of the race, while Swindells (Brisbane) took 7th; Ben Walter was 16th.

The second race of the weekend ran without any safety car intervention with Graham claiming sixth place. Swindells was running strongly before two off-road excursions slipped him back to 16th, just one place ahead of Walter; Gore finished 22nd.

Any chance of Graham getting inside the top-five ended on the opening lap when Ben Morley pushed him wide on the final turn. In contrast Swindells and Walter were making fantastic progress. Separate incidents saw them slip back, but Swindells but his head down to finish sixth; Walter was placed 15th. Driving a steady race brought a 13th place finish for Gore.

The talking point in race #3 was the final accident that eliminated Adam Graham, Nick Foster, Nick Percat and Brad Lowe. An incident in front of Graham blanketed the track with dust; Graham struck Nick Foster at speed before being slammed into by Nick Percat.

All drivers were OK, but the initial estimate of damage to Graham’s car was in the vicinity of $20,000.

Team Principal of Minda Motorsport, the operation responsible for running the Britek Motorsport Formula Ford Scholarship programme, Bruin Beasley was looking at the positives of the weekend.

“Adam showed his speed in practice, Martin had great pace in the races and both Ben and Taylor learnt a lot this weekend,” said Beasley.

“If not for the incidents in the final race, I’m sure Adam would have been top-five and that was a fair indication of where he was this weekend.

“Martin has come a long way since Eastern Creek. I’m sure once he puts together a consistent race he will be up there.

“Ben is continuing to improve his pace. Again a few less errors and he will move up the order.

“Taylor’s accident in the opening race was not his doing. I was pleased with how he bounced back and his dedication to learning his race craft.

“In terms of all the incidents, including the big one in the final race, we just have to accept that it’s part of the learning process. In saying that, I hope that a number of other drivers also learnt from what happened this weekend and next time we go racing at Sandown we get to see good, exciting and fair racing.” scholarship_driver.jpg

The Britek Motorsport Scholarship Formula Ford team next goes racing at Sandown International Raceway with the V8 Supercar Championship Series on June 7-9.

In other Britek Motorsport Scholarship news Gold Coast go-karter Scott McLaughlin won the opening round of the Fujitsu Victorian All-Star Series at Oakleigh Kart Track. McLaughlin won the pre-final before putting in a dominating display to head the 26-kart field in the final.
