Family ties set to rule at TinTop titles PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 09 April 2008
Family ties will run rife at Willowbank Raceway's Tin Top Titles next weekend, withaaron-thumb.jpg leading Pro Stockers Aaron and Tyronne Tremayne and Top Doorslammer legends Victor and Ben Bray set to do battle for their respective championships on April 18 and 19.

The Tin Top Titles will feature, amongst an action-packed support program, the powerhouse Group One categories of Top Doorslammer and Pro Stock, with 16 car fields seeing double the usual amount of competitors battling it out for the title. Currently leading the Pro Stock ANDRA Title chase 1-2 aboard their Steven Fox Homes/Aqualine Pools/VP Racing Fuel Chev Cobalts, Bundaberg brothers Aaron and Tyronne followed their dad into the sport, and are now enjoying the spoils.

Although the youngest, 24 year old Aaron has been running the longest, and after his debut Pro Stock season (05/06) saw him secure third overall followed by a runner-up result for 06/07, it looks like the 07/08 season may just be his year.

“Hopefully I can clinch my first title this year, it seems to be heading that way on average anyway,” laughed Aaron.

“Tyronne is in second and although I have 100 points on him he will always be a threat, but as long as one of us wins I will go home happy – but of course I would prefer that it was me that won!"

Twenty-six year old Tyronne is currently enjoying his first full season in the Group One category, and with only six meetings under his belt and a few runs in a street car backing up his current second place in the championship it seems racing talent definitely runs in the family.

“I don’t think I will catch (Aaron), but at the same time I don’t really mind, I have my eye on holding down second for now – while Aaron is 100 points in front of me, (John) Barbagallo is only 5 points behind me and has been running really well,” said Tyronne.

“It is good running with Aaron, we clash a bit at work but once we are racing we get along - we are typical brothers and I have to say it was great to come away from Sydney in February with the low ET record as I took it off him, so we hold one each now (Aaron currently holds the top speed record).”

ben-braythunmb.jpgWhile the Tremaynes enjoy their sibling rivalry, for the Brays the dynamic is slightly different as a father and son duo, with dad Victor currently eighth while 24 year old Ben is third behind John Zappia and Brett Stevens in the Top Doorslammer Championship points.

“It has been a bit of a different season for us, we started off strong and we dropped the ball a bit in the middle of the year - the competition got a bit tougher and I think now we are starting our run a bit late,” said Victor.

“Mathematically Ben is still in striking distance, although Zappia has one hand on the trophy at the moment Ben has had some good events lately including a Personal Best in Perth, and now we head to the Tin Tops where the track is a bit more predictable and we have more time up our sleeves to test the new gear, so hopefully it can go our way.

“With every race we go to, we don’t go to try to come second, the aim is to put Team Bray up there 1-2 and we used to do it more often, and now after completing the transition period we have been through with a new workshop, trucks and gear we want to start doing it again.”

The junior Bray was able to keep his championship hopes alive with a Personal Best performance in Perth last month, which saw him take the runner-up mantle from the finals berth against fellow Queenslander Brett Stevens.

“Lining up against Stevens in Perth was just one of those things - we had put a new gearbox in that was sworn not to break and after four runs it did just that – we were very surprised but that’s racing,” said Ben.

“Racing with dad is pretty good, although it brings the competition level up as with us both working in the same workshop he knows all my secrets, while I don’t know all of his as he is pretty good at keeping some to himself!

“We are always asked whether there is a strategy for if we race together but he would never throw a race – his response to that is ‘if he can’t beat me then he doesn’t deserve to win’ – neither of us like losing and we don’t like giving any race away, so its always interesting when we get to line up against each other.”

For the first time ever in Australia, a 16 car Top Doorslammer Field and for only the second time ever in Australia a 16 Car Pro Stock field will be hitting the track at Willowbank Raceway for the 2008 Tin Top Titles.

In a usual event, fans would see eight competitors line up against each other for the first round eliminations, but at the Tin Tops they will get to see the top 16 competitors in two of Australian Drag Racing’s powerhouse Group One categories duke it out for the win – effectively giving them twice the amount of racing than ever before.

This will be the first time ever that Top Doorslammer has had such a large competitive field, and will be only the second time for the Pro Stock category in Australia and the first time for Queenslanders to see so many Pro Stockers up against each other.

The April program will feature the penultimate round of Group One activity in Top Doorslammer and Pro Stock categories as drivers enjoy one final hit out prior to the season-ending Castrol EDGE Winternationals at Willowbank Raceway on June 5-8.

Four wheels and a roof to boot will be standard for most entries in this quarter mile extravaganza, which brings together many traditional drag racing categories coupled with a selection of unique race cars that enjoy cult following among their loyal fans.
