The acquisition of new engines, along with input from Fujitsu Racing’s own engine department, is a vital addition ahead of what is expected to be a very tough fight across the Tasman. After years of planning, the all-new Hamilton street race event is sure to be a highlight on the New Zealand sporting scene. Bright is looking forward to the new track and engine package. “I know that the Kiwi organisers have been trying for many years to get an event like this off the ground,” said Bright. “The people of Hamilton and the surrounding Waikato area have done an excellent job with the facility and I’m sure it will be a great event. “With a new track no one is a clear favourite. The last time a track debuted was Bahrain two years ago and I won it! I don’t want to predict a victory, but we would be very happy with a top-10. “We have a new engine package for this event and I’m sure we can make some “Street racing usually takes its toll on cars. We want to keep out of all the mess and I’m sure if that happens we can really score a good result” A new track creates new challenges for the Fujitsu Racing team. However, Chief Engineer Geoff Slater has been gathering as much information as possible ahead of the weekend’s racing. “Yes it’s a new track, but we have done our research,” said Slater. “We have been studying everything from circuit diagrams, through to YouTube of people driving the course and even a virtual lap they have produced for a video game. “The circuit is much like Adelaide or the Gold Coast in terms of the type of corners. However, practice on Friday is going to be very important to fully understand the track ahead of qualifying.” Cars first hit the track on Friday for extended practice. The elimination-styled qualifying format will be held just before lunchtime on Saturday with the opening 36-lap race that afternoon. The final two 36-lap races will be held on Sunday. 2007 V8 Supercar Championship Series Round 3, Hamilton, NZ CHAMPIONSHIP POINTS – After round 2 of 14 1. Jamie Whincup – 540 points 2. On paper the circuit looks fast with some long straights and a tight complex of turns to finish the lap. The turn two hairpin will be a major passing zone and the slowest on the circuit at an estimated 65km/h, while cars will be forced to brake hard after the run along the pit straight into a tight first corner. Location: Frankston business district, Hamilton, NZ Circuit length: 3.4km Circuit direction: Clockwise Average speed: 141 km/h (estimated) Maximum speed: 240 km/h (estimated) |
