One Open-Wheel weekend sees two races in two hemispheres PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 17 April 2008
Fans of the IndyCar Series, of which Australia’s Gold Coast Indy 300 is a part, will have their attention divided between two races in two hemispheres come April 19-20, with open-wheel racing heading to both Tokyo, Japan and Long Beach, California. The Indy Japan 300 at Twin Ring Motegi on April 19 will see 18 IndyCar Series drivers compete, while thirty-six hours later 20 drivers, including the nine who have transitioned to the newly unified IndyCar Series this year, will head to the Grand Prix of Long Beach - the finale to the Champ Car World Series and the Panoz DP01 chassis.

While the series splits in two momentarily, Australia will have a strong presence at both events, with Queensland’s Will Power heading to the Champ Car World Series finale while Sydney’s Ryan Briscoe and Brisbane-born Kiwi Scott Dixon head to Tokyo.

Toowoomba-born driver Power heads to California fresh from his first top 10 IndyCar Series finish with eighth on the streets of St Petersburg, while both Dixon and Briscoe will be looking to make amends in Tokyo after St. Pete saw round one winner Dixon classified 22nd after left rear suspension issues took their toll and Briscoe was classified 23rd by a crash after leading 11 laps.

Drivers from both events will earn points towards the IndyCar Series championship and Australian fans can catch the action from both events on ESPN with the Twin Ring Motegi race shown live on Saturday April 19 1.45pm Australian Eastern Standard Time and the Long Beach Grand Prix to be televised same day on Monday April 21 at 7.30am Australian Eastern Standard Time.

Following the split third round the unified series continues on a schedule that is the most diverse in world motorsports.

The 2008 schedule will take the teams and drivers to short ovals, superspeedways, and road and street courses including the Gold Coast Indy 300 which is regarded as a ‘crown jewel’ in international motorsport.

The future of the Gold Coast Indy 300 was recently secured for at least another six years with a deal being reached with the new-look IndyCar Series and V8 Supercars Australia.

Now regarded as one of the world’s iconic motorsport events, the Gold Coast Indy 300 will now continue until and including 2013 with major plans already underway for a massive 20th anniversary celebration in 2010.

With 96 hours of non-stop excitement over October 23-26 as the Gold Coast comes alive to the sound of the IndyCars burning up the track and Australia’s own V8 Supercars scorching around one of the most famous beach-side cities in the world, the event is the hottest ticket in town.

Tickets are now on sale for the Gold Coast Indy 300 with ticket options to suit everyone's needs. Four day Grandstand passes are available for those who prefer to watch the racing from the comfort of their own reserved seat or for those who prefer to wander around and soak up the atmosphere then a four day, weekend or single day General Admission pass might be more their style. WHAT THEY HAD TO SAY…

Will Power - #8 Aussie Vineyards – Team Australia
“I am looking forward to the Long Beach race,” said Power.

“It will be the last time I get to drive a Champ Car, but it will be for IndyCar Series points. This race presents KVRT Aussie Vineyards – Team Australia with a fantastic chance to get points and go for a win.

“I like the circuit. It is very tough to get any advantage over other drivers, which is why qualifying is so important. I think it will be a very competitive race and I would love to improve my performance over last year.”

Ryan Briscoe - #6 Team Penske Racing
“I am really looking forward to the race in Japan. It will be my second time competing there, and I am looking forward to the challenge,” said Briscoe.

“Twin Ring Motegi is a unique and technical oval, so I think it will be a lot fun this weekend. The fans are always so excited to see us, which as a competitor, makes it exciting to be there and be able to put on a good show.

“I am certainly hoping for a solid finish so I can begin my way up the Championship points ladder.”

Tony George, CEO, Indy Racing League
“It is going to be a great weekend, and we're going to make the most of ensuring that both events come off in world-class fashion,” said George.
