16 car felds impress on day one of Castrol Edge Tin Top Titles PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 19 April 2008
gary-phillips-satttthumb.jpgDay one of the Castrol EDGE Tin Top Titles has provided a brilliant preamble to tomorrow’s full-day race program with some exciting passes provided by the 16 car fields of Top Doorslammer and Pro Stock.

For the first time ever in Australia, a 16 car Top Doorslammer Field and for only the second time ever in the country a 16 Car Pro Stock field are hitting the track at Willowbank Raceway, and the fields provided some thrilling passes with the cool temperatures catching some competitors unaware. At the close of tonight’s two qualifying runs for the Group One categories, Gary Phillips was atop the Doorslammer times with a 6.139s set in the first run, while Pro Stock’s championship leader Aaron Tremayne topped his category with a 7.193s from his second pass.

While tonight’s program originally showed three qualifying runs scheduled, the third will be completed tomorrow afternoon at 1.00pm ahead of the eliminations at 4.00pm, after increasingly lowering temperatures caused the program to be altered.

After setting his 6.139s Phillips sat out the second qualifier, satisfied that his first run would be enough to see him through.

“The car is fine and it is looking good for tomorrow - my 6.139s might not stay on top now with the third qualifier rescheduled to tomorrow, but it should stay within the top eight and that is fine with me,” said Phillips.

“I am not worried about where I qualify as long as I make the field and I am confident of that, so I will sit out tomorrow’s final qualifying run and keep the car fresh for the eliminations in the evening.”

Tremayne, the younger of the two brothers (older brother is Tyronne) currentlyaaronsatttthumb.jpg sitting 1-2 in the Pro Stock championship, put in some good inroads to defending his points lead this weekend by setting a 7.193s pass in his second run to sit atop the field with one run to go.

“I feel my run should have been faster, but I won’t be changing anything on the car tonight and we will just come out tomorrow and see how we go,” said Tremayne.

Other exciting runs for the night were provided by Sean Mifsud and Ray Bernard as well as husband and wife team Brett and Kath Stevens in Top Dooslammer.

mifsudttsatthumb.jpgMifsud and his Wild Willy Top Doorslammer - being tuned this weekend by Wild Bunch forerunner Camp Stanley - and Ray Bernard provided the first side-by-side pass of the evening with 6.19s showing on both sides of the strip.

Husband and wife duo Brett and Kath Stevens also had the crowd on the edge of their seats when Kath’s Jack Daniel’s machine crossed the centre line.

Throwing everything into the start, Kath had the better jump before her Doorslammer turned a hard right across the centre line and directly into the path ofbrett-and-kath-stevensthumb.jpg husband Brett, who acted quickly to abort his run safely while Kath fought to bring her car back into the groove on her side of the track.

Gates for tomorrow’s action open at 9.00am with further qualifying kicking off at 10.00am and eliminations scheduled to begin at 3.00pm. With the 16 car fields in Top Doorslammer and Pro Stock there will be even more racing action for fans, with one round of qualifying and four rounds of racing on the table before anyone can claim the Castrol EDGE Tin Top Titles crown.

Tomorrow night’s action will also feature another first for Willowbank Raceway – the inaugural Toyota Celebrity Drag Race for Charity, to be held during the Group One eliminations.

Stepping up to the mark will be Socceroo, Queensland Roar defender and former English Premier League soccer player Danny Tiatto, Australia’s strongest man ‘Thunder’ (aka Derek Boyer) of the blockbuster television program ‘Gladiators’, Gold Coast Blaze Centre and world champion NBL player Ben Melmeth and three-time and reigning Australian Ironman Champion and 2002 World Ironman Champion Shannon Eckstein.

Kids 13 and under are free at the gate, with Adult tickets $30 dollars and Students with ID applicable for a discounted ticket of $20.
